Update>>Tulsa has now formally announced that Montgomery is the new head coach of the Golden Hurricane.
Sources tell us that Baylor offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery is expected to become the new head coach at Tulsa.
Since the job opened up, we had been hearing that Tulsa would target a coach with an outstanding offensive background, and it doesn't get much better on that front than coach Montgomery. The Baylor offense has been one of the most explosive offenses in the country since Art Briles and Montgomery have been in Waco, leading the country in scoring the past two seasons, and ranking in the top 4 scoring offenses dating back to 2011.
Montgomery, is a two time FootballScoop Coach of the Year Award winner, first in 2011 as quarterbacks coach, and then again in 2013 taking home offensive coordinator of the year honors.
Before taking the reigns of the Bear offense under Briles, Montgomery served as his offensive coordinator at Stephenville HS (TX), orchestrating some of the most exciting offenses in the state of Texas and helping to popularize the spread attack.
Arizona State offensive coordinator Mike Norvell, another highly regarded offensive mind, was a finalist for the job as well.
Montgomery takes over for Bill Blankenship, who went 24-27 in four seasons leading the Golden Hurricane.
