The Titans announced this morning that they have relieved Ken Whisenhunt of his head coaching duties.
Whisenhunt was 23 games into his tenure as the head coach of the franchise and was informed this morning that the organization wanted to head in a new direction.
“After thoughtful consideration, the decision has been made to relieve Ken Whisenhunt of his head coaching duties,” Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk explained in a release. “We have expected more progress on the field, and I felt it was time to move in a different direction."
"I would like to thank Ken for his efforts with our team, as he worked very hard to try to move us forward.”
Whisenhunt was just 3-20 in his tenure with the team since being hired in 2014. On Sunday against the Texans, the Titans dropped their sixth straight game to bring their record to 1-6 on the year.
He previously served as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals from 2007-2012, where he went 45-51 inlcuding two trips to the playoffs, including a loss to the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII. The following year he took the team to the NFL Divisional game, where they lost to the Saints. In the three years that followed, the Cards never posted a record better than 8-8, missing the playoffs each season.
Mike Mularkey, who served as assistant head coach / tight ends coach under Whisenhunt, has been tabbed interim head coach.
