After less than a year on the job, Syracuse athletic director Mark Coyle is leaving the same position at Minnesota. Syracuse has released a statement citing Coyle's decision is based on family reasons.
Norwood Teague resigned from the athletic director position at Minnesota in August after allegations of sexual harassment surfaced.
Prior to taking the job at Syracuse, Coyle spent a few years at Boise State (2011-2014) and was the deputy director of athletics at Kentucky. Prior to his appointment at Kentucky, Coyle was at Minnesota, where he served in a number of different capacities including associate AD for external relations.
In short, the position at Minnesota marks a coming home of sorts for Coyle to somewhere he and his family are familiar.
Back in Novemeber, still very early on in his tenure at Syracuse, Coyle led the charge that hired Dino Babers from Bowling Green. At Boise State, Coyle hired a total of five head coaches, including most notably, Bryan Harsin - who replaced the super successful Chris Petersen (who left for Washington).
Football-wise at Minnesota, Coyle will inherit a situation that saw head coach Jerry Kill resign back in October due to health reasons, and defensive coordinator (and longtime Kill assistant) Tracy Claeys stepped in as an interim head coach for a few weeks before eventually agreeing to a three-year contract as the Gophers new head coach moving forward.
