">reported Saturday night that Bowles will not return next season. The Jets, 4-11 on the season, conclude the 2018 campaign at New England on Sunday. The best season for Bowles came in year one in 2015, when Bowles led the Jets to a 10-6 finish, just missing the playoffs. The Jets finished 5-11 in 2016 and '17 and need an upset of the Patriots to reach that mark for the third straight season. Back on December 29th, 2017, amid rumors that they may be looking to move on, the organization announced that they were bringing Bowles back for the 2018 season, and had also signed him to a contract extension taking him through 2020.
Bowles had spent all but three seasons of his coaching career in the NFL, getting his break as the secondary coach with the Jets back in 2000. Prior to that, he served as defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Morehouse College, and Grambling State. Since entering the league, he's coached the secondary for the Jets, Browns, Cowboys, Dolphins, and Eagles, and has coordinated defenses in Philadelphia and Arizona.
During the 2011 season, Bowles actually stepped in as the interim head coach following the dismissal of Tony Sparano and led the team to a 2-1 finish, narrowly beating the Bills and Jets and losing by just three points to the Patriots. The Dolphins elected to bring in Green Bay offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Joe Philbin as head coach, who brought in his own defensive coordinator while Bowles landed in Philly coaching the secondary.
