When Alma went looking for a new head coach to lead their program, the eventually landed on Romeo HS (MI) co-head coach and offensive coordinator Jason Couch.
Couch had collected a number of coach of the year honors leading the Romeo program, and was an alumnus of Alma. As a player there, he helped anchor the top offense in Division III at center as a senior, helping bring the program a conference title while being named All MIAA, and honorable mention All American.
Long story short, Couch has a unique love for the Alma Scots program.
That was never more evident than this past weekend, when Couch took the field for the Scots game against Manchester (D-III - IN) in some rather interesting coaching attire.
That's right. For Couch's first home game he decided to take the field in full kilt, vest, and knee high socks, fully committing to the Scots mascot look.
You may remember a few Division II coaches on the sidelines of a game in full Batman and Joker costumes at a few years ago around Halloween in costumes, but coaching a college game in a kilt might be a first.
Bill Belichick has his signature game day sideline hoodie (which often has the sleeves cut off), Steve Spurrier had the visor, Tom Landry had the fedora...maybe coach Couch's will be the kilt from now on.
Probably not, but it's fun to toss out there.
As for the game, Couch's guys put together a drive with about 3:30 left in the game and punched one in with about 23 seconds left in the game to take a 37-33 lead before holding on for the win over Manchester.
