Chardon HS (OH) head coach Mitch Hewitt and his team had just punched their ticket to the state title game over the weekend when he stood in front of them to reflect on a big victory for their program.
But before talking about their win, coach Hewitt first shared an image from the day that brought him to tears. On the way into their semifinal game, coach Hewitt looked out his window and saw a community united supporting his football program. He admitted to his players that seeing that brought tears to his eyes.
"Let me tell you why though. It wasn't because of our record, or necessarily the team at that point, it was like, for two minutes no one cared what political side you were on, no one cared what COVID stance you took. It was unity. I saw little kids out there being what little kids should be. They were smiling and celebrating and being a community."
"Guys, sports is a unifier man. It brings people together...and you just bought your community one more week because of the way that you live, the way that you treat people."
"The world is so angry right now, and you brought people together, and you bought us several more games man. Now fellas, you're playing for a state title."
The post game talk really impressed Urban Meyer, who saw his former Bowling Green player's message on social media and showed his respect by shining a light on it.
