In a relatively short amount of time, Sam Carter is proving to be an in-demand coach.
He again appears to be on the move.
Carter, a former star safety under Gary Patterson at TCU, is poised to reunite with one of his coaching mentors, sources tell FootballScoop.
Working to fill out his initial staff at Purdue, Ryan Walters is expected to hire Carter as the Boilermakers’ defensive backs coach.
Both Walters and Carter worked together previously at the University of Missouri, where they both initially worked under Barry Odom. Walters climbed rapidly, earning defensive coordinator responsibilities with the Tigers and Carter broke into the coaching ranks as a defensive quality control coach under the direction of Odom and Walters.
Carter then got his first full-time on-field assistant coaching post at Arkansas under Sam Pittman; Carter was widely praised for his impact on the Razorbacks’ secondary before he left Arkansas after two years and spent the 2022 season on the Ole Miss defensive staff.
Hired by Lane Kiffin in January 2022, Carter was the Rebels’ cornerbacks coach and worked closely with co-defensive coordinators Maurice Crum and Chris Partridge, with Partridge in charge of the Rebels’ safeties.
Walters landed his first head coaching job last month after previous Purdue coach Jeff Brohm left the Boilermakers to return to his alma mater, Louisville.
Purdue was defeated, 63-7, earlier this week in the Citrus Bowl.
The Boilermakers will make their debut under Walters in September when they open the season at home against Fresno State before traveling to Virginia Tech in Week 2.
