Reports: ACC looking to Big Ten athletic director for next commissioner

Update >> Pete Thamel tweets that the ACC Board of Governors has approved Phillips as the league's next commissioner with an announcement expected later today.

According to reports last night and this morning, the ACC is looking to the Big Ten athletic director ranks for their next commissioner.

Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips is the target of the ACC's interest, and Pete Thamel shares that the league is finalizing an offer for Phillips with an announcement expected soon. Phillips has been at Northwestern for the past 13 years, and is one of the most respected athletic directors in college sports.

Phillips nearly become the Big Ten commissioner before Kevin Warren was appointed to the post back in June of 2019.

Coming in, Phillips would replace retiring longtime league commissioner John Swofford, who took over the post back in 1997. Swofford left his post as the athletic director at North Carolina to become the ACC commissioner.

Most folks believe that the biggest to-do that Phillips will be charged with is to rework the league's TV deal with ESPN, as the deal largely doesn't compare to what the Big Ten, SEC, and Big 12 have worked out.
