Tyler Roehl just wrapped up his first season in Ames, as Matt Campbell's assistant head coach and running backs coach, and it was a historic one for the Cyclones.
Iowa State finished with the best season in program history, going 11-3 while finishing just outside the 12 teams selected to play in the first ever 12-team College Football Playoff.
While Matt Campbell has managed to keep his staff intact this off season, Dan Campbell and the Lions are reportedly set to raid the staff and land a Cyclone assistant.
Tyler Roehl, who we profiled extensively last year when the former North Dakota State offensive coordinator became Eddie George's offensive coordinator at Tennessee State (FCS), is expected to land a job as an offensive assistant on the rebuilt staff in Detroit, according to CBS Sports.
A former 35 Under 35 selection by the AFCA, Roehl coordinated one of the most bruising offenses in college football at NDSU where hew as part of seven FCS national titles and eight Missouri Valley Conference titles with the Bison.
After 11 seasons at NDSU, including five as the program's offensive coordinator, Roehl bet on himself and briefly took the Tennessee State associate head coach and offensive coordinator job for a few months last January before the opportunity to join the Iowa State staff popped up.
A former Bison standout, Roehl signed with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2009 after an All American career at NDSU.
The opportunity with the Lions marks his first foray into coaching in the league, but his style of offense will be a great fit for Campbell and Detroit, where a culture of toughness and physicality have a premium value.
