Indiana's Tom Allen has been seeking to replace defensive coordinator Kane Wommack for a month.
It appears Allen's search is on the verge of concluding with a veteran defensive assistant poised to join Allen's Hoosiers staff from the Southeastern Conference.
Sources confirmed on Sunday to FootballScoop that Allen was close to nailing down Charlton Warren, Georgia's defensive backs coach, to the position of Indiana's defensive coordinator. ESPN's Adam Rittenberg first reported the news.
A former Air Force player who also got his career started with nine-straight years on the Falcons' staff, Warren also has logged at Nebraska, North Carolina, Florida and Tennessee prior to his work the past two seasons for the Bulldogs.
Warren will have a tall task ahead of him at Indiana to perpetuate the success the Hoosiers enjoyed with the Allen-Wommack combination. Indiana had the nation's No. 19 scoring defense in 2020 at just 20.25 points per game. The Hoosiers ranked 45th in 2019, when they allowed just a little more than 24 points per game.
Now, all eyeballs turn to Athens to see if Will Muschamp will join Kirby's staff, and if so in what capacity.
