The immense devastation that Hurricane Helene left behind has left countless without power, without homes, and stranded without answers.
A number of areas of the country in the hurricane's path have declared a state of emergency.
One of those areas is Jackson County, NC - the home of Western Carolina. The Catamounts are set to host Wofford on Saturday at 2:30.
Because of the state of emergency, and wanting to be sensitive to the impact the storm has had and the scarcity of resources (including food, water, electricity and fuel), the school has announced that the game will take place without spectators, eerily reminiscent of how sports went on during the COVID pandemic, but this time for very different reasons.
With rescue and recovery efforts underway, this move is also intentional to keep roads clear for rescue and recovery efforts for disaster relief vehicles.
In addition to that, sources tell FootballScoop that Wofford will make the trip to WCU the day of (normally a two-hour trip one way not considering the closures and re-routes), will pack all of their own food, and will also need to plan to have enough gas to get them in and out of Cullowhee.
We also understand the only communication on campus is through Starlink, though both staffs will be able to use their respective headsets as normal.
The fact that they are finding a way to play this game, and to do it while fully acknowledging the tough times so many are facing, is beyond remarkable.
Please join us in tipping our caps to the support staff, DFOs and everyone dedicated to making this game happen, and also in praying for all those affected by the storms and intensive flooding.
As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.
