Biff Poggi addresses "inappropriate" social media interaction between coordinator and Charlotte fans

Biff Poggi and defensive coordinator Ryan Osborn have a relationship that spans back to their days on the support staff at Michigan under Jim Harbaugh.

So when it came to time for a stern conversation following their win over Rice over the weekend, Poggi didn't hesitate.

The whole situation centers on the use of social media, and started with a clip that criticized the 49ers defense following a big touchdown for Rice that saw a player break a number of tackles on the way to the end zone.

That video sparked a response from Charlotte defensive coordinator Ryan Osborn.

The back-and-forth between coach and fans was something that didn't exactly go under the radar.

Before turning the page to what is turning into a solid small school in state rivalry with ECU, Biff Poggi took the podium to talk about how he handled the interaction.

“Sunday morning it came to my attention after the game that coach Osborn had been in an inappropriate back and forth with a fan on Twitter. I met with coach Osborn. We had a very stern talk. That is completely unacceptable. He knows it. He issued an apology, and it will not happen again.”

Poggi ended the conversation with his second-year defensive coordinator, who he hired after Oz spent a season in the NFL with the Ravens, with a reminder about their fan base.

“What I said to him was this, ‘Go home tonight and thank God that we coach at a place where our fans care,’ because - I’m not going to name any names - but we have been places, and I have been places where you play, and nobody cares. Our fans care. They show up."

"This program is twelve years old, and it hasn't had the wins our fans wanted, but they keep showing up, and it's three straight sellouts. I think Saturday’s supposed to be like standing room only tickets. There are schools who win a lot of games that would die for that, and I love the fact that when we win, they’re joyous, and when we lose, they take it as hard as we do.”
