Friday: Coaches Quick Hits

Portland State: Willamette head coach Mark Speckman will interview on Monday.  San Diego State offensive coordinator Al Borges is expected to interview next week.  Others that could be interviewing next week include Stan Brock, Nigel Burton (Nevada DC), ang Greg Lupfer (Cal Poly DC).

SMU: We hear June Junes has agreed to a contract extension through 2014.

Notre Dame: We are hearing that Notre Dame officials have been gathering information on former Baltimore Ravens head coach Brian Billick.

Tulane: Our sources tell us that head coach Bob Toledo will keep all of his current assistant coaches.  We hear that Toledo does plan to appoint a current assistant as the team's special teams coordinator.

UNLV: We are hearing that the UNLV administration isn't sure about the route they want to go with the new head coach.  Our sources tell us the administration has even asked for the input and advice from basketball coach Lon Kruger.  Three names we hear the administration has talked about are Dennis Franchione, Andy Ludwig, and Ed Orgeron.

Hiram College: Bob Wolfe has announced that he is retiring as head coach.

Sam Houston State: According to one Texas newspaper this morning, "Some possible applicants being mentioned are Tarleton State coach Sam McElroy, Louisiana-Lafayette defensive coordinator Kevin Fouquier, Central Missouri coach Willie Fritz and Pittsburgh linebackers coach Joe Tumpkin. All but Tumpkin applied for the Sam Houston job along with Whitten in 2005."

Georgia Southern: We are hearing that Georgia Southern has offered the job to GA Tech assistant Jeff Monken.  Monken coaches the slot backs and serves as the special teams coordinator at Tech.  He is a former GSU assistant under Paul Johnson.  If Monken accepts, it will be interesting to see if Paul Johnson asks corners coach Charles Kelly to assume the special teams coordinator position.  Kelly did a fine job as the special teams coordinator under Chan Gailey.

Colorado: Dan Hawkins will return as head coach.  Colorado's AD confirmed today.

University of Redlands: Assist the Head Coach and coordinators with all aspects of a NCAA Division III football program including compliance with NCAA, conference, and university rules and regulations, student recruitment, contest scheduling, summer camp coaching, team position coaching and other duties as assigned.  Teaching of activity courses within the Department of Physical Education may be assigned.    Bachelor's and admission to the School of Education graduate program at the University of Redlands is required. Portland State: We are hearing that Portland State interviewed Kevin Strasser yesterday afternoon.  Strasser is currently serving as the OC with the Edmonton Eskimos. He is a former Portland State assistant.

Colorado:  A local reporter in Denver is reporting that two sources within the program have told him that head coach Dan Hawkins has told his staff that after meetings with the University's Chancellor that he "has the understanding that he is safe for another year".

The Sioux City Bandits: are seeking a high energy, aggressive  Defensive Coordinator for the upcoming 2010 season.  The Sioux City Bandits are part of  the IFL and start play in March of 2010.  Please send all resumes and questions to Bob Scott at This email address is being protected from spambots. High School Scoop

Jackson State: Offensive coordinator James Woody will not return. Offensive line coach Bruce Johnson will not return.

Memphis: We are hearing that Washington Redskins secondary coach Jerry Gray has a few names he is interested in hiring if he does indeed accept the Memphis head coaching job.  Gray, who is a former Texas Longhorn player, would like to hire Major Applewhite (Texas running backs / assistant head coach) as his OC.  Our sources tell us Applewhite is not interested in the job.  We do hear that Gray could offer a defensive job to former Kent State head coach (1991-93) Pete Cordelli.  Cordelli last coached on the college level at Western Michigan in 2002.  We are also hearing that Gray will offer a position to Washington Redskins defensive quality control Arthur Smith. Lambuth's Hugh Freeze could also land a position on Gray's staff.

Buffalo Bills: The Bills have contacted Mike Shanahan.

Bethune-Cookman: We have heard Carl Crennel's name mentioned.

Tuesday: Coaches Quick Hits

Furman: Our sources tell us Furman head coach Bobby Lamb is expected to return.

Tampa Bay Bucs: We are hearing the Bucs offensive coordinator Greg Olson has signed a contract extension. Olson was serving in the last year of his contract.

Youngstown State: Nebraska defensive coordinator Carl Pelini isn't saying whether he is or isn't interested in the vacant head coaching job at Youngstown State in Ohio. Asked about the job after Tuesday's practice, Pelini said, "I'm not even thinking about that right now. I'm thinking of Colorado."

The 44-year-old Pelini is the older brother of Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini. The Pelinis are natives of Youngstown, and Carl earned his undergraduate degree at Youngstown State. The school is looking for a successor to Jon Heacock. The Vindicator newspaper of Youngstown reported Heacock's salary as $125,000 a year. Pelini makes $208,360 at Nebraska.

Memphis: ‘‘The one thing I want to make clear - absolutely, positively clear - is we are not going to do anything before the last (regular-season) game,'' AD RC Johnson said. ‘‘It's not fair to the coaches and it's not fair to the players.''

Bethune-Cookman: We hear St. Paul's College defensive coordinator Kevin Grigsby is interesting in the Bethune-Cookman job.  Grigsby is a Bethune-Cookman graduate. 

Itawamba CC: We are hearing ICC has talked to several candidates on the phone, but formal interviews will begin soon for the head coaching job.

West Alabama: Our sources tell us that defensive coordinator Andy Greening has left the program.  We hear Greening will be joining the staff at Northwest JC in Mississippi.

Livingstone College: We hear interim head coach Eric Brown has interviewed.

Livingstone College: We have heard that several interviews took place on Monday.  Our source tells us that Cheyney University wide receivers coach Chris Roulac along with Linwood Ferguson are 2 candidates certainly in the mix.  Ferguson is the former OC at Eastern Kentucky.

Bethune-Cookman: We hear Norfolk State's Jeff Parker and Linwood Ferguson are interested in the Bethune-Cookman job.  Our sources tell us a ton of people are applying for this job.  

DePauw University: Robby Long has been announced as the new head coach.  Long's "interim" tag has been taken off after doing a great job this season.

Evangel University: Our sources are telling us that Western State defensive coordinator Brenton Illum has just accepted this morning the head coaching job at Evangel University.

Memphis: Our sources close to Memphis and Fred Smith tell us that Memphis is close to offering the head coaching job to Washington Redskins assistant Jerry Gray. We hear Gray is interviewing today and the candidates will know a decision tomorrow. Another source has informed us that Gray is currently in a meeting with Memphis AD RC Johnson.

North Texas: "I really don't know," Dodge said of what his future at UNT might be. "I will sit down with coach Villarreal (AD) when the season is over with. At this point I don't know. He will let me know."

Kentucky: "As far as whether I'm coming back next year, I'm like that old Energizer bunny; I might need some batteries recharged, but we'll talk about that at the appropriate time," Rich Brooks said.

But Brooks became irate when another reporter tried to follow up on the issue.

"You know what? I'm not going to answer anything about that anymore," Brooks said. "I'm going to talk about Tennessee. None of that junk. This is not the appropriate forum. We have a huge game with a lot at stake, and we'll address those issues at the appropriate time."

By the way, has anybody noticed the outstanding job Brooks and his staff have done this season?  We have!

UNLV: UCLA senior associate AD Ross Bjork is in the running for the UNLV AD job.

Tampa Bay Bucs: Head coach Raheem Morris is demoting defensive coordinator Jim Bates to an advisor role.  Bates will remain with the team through the end of the season.  Morris is taking over the defense.

Sam Houston State: One of the newspapers in Texas says this morning, "Some candidates who could be considered for replacing Whitten include Abilene-Christian's Chris Thomsen, West Texas A&M's Don Carthel, and Blinn College's Brad Franchione, Jr."  We will have our guys start making some calls to find out more names.

Portland State: According to an Oregon newspaper, "One of the first interviews is expected to be Willamette coach Mark Speckman. Other candidates include Central Washington coach Blaine Bennett, San Diego State offensive coordinator Al Borges, former Army coach Stan Brock, Nevada defensive coordinator Nigel Burton, BYU defensive coordinator Jaime Hill, Colorado offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau and Montana assistant Robin Pflugrad." Cal Poly DC Greg Lupfer is also in the mix.

Southeastern Louisiana: Savannah State athletic director Bart Bellairs has accepted the AD position at Southeastern Louisiana University.

Georgia Southern: One of our sources is telling us that "it has to be one of the Georgia Tech guys."  Jeff Monken (Slot Backs / Special Teams Coordinator) and Brian Bohannon (Quarterbacks / B-Backs) both previously coached at Georgia Southern under Paul Johnson.  Then there is GA Tech defensive line coach / recruiting coordinator, Giff Smith, who is extremely well respected in the coaching profession and is a former All-American at Georgia Southern. 

Saint Anselm College: Immediate Opening: seeking one defensive football intern. The internship program is designed to provide coaches with a rich blend of coaching and administration experience at a competitive NCAA, DII private college. This position includes a stipend of $8,000 and the following job duties: coaching their own position, practice planning, scouting, video analysis, skill and team instruction, all phases of recruiting and responsibilities as assigned by the head coach. Coaching and/or playing experienced preferred. Minority applications are strongly encouraged. Meals are included but NO IMMEDIATE LODGING - but may become a possibility at a later date. Georgia Southern: We are trying to find out more about Georgia Southern's interest in former Auburn assistant Hugh Nall. 

Bethune-Cookman: Head coach Alvin Wyatt will not return.

Princeton: We hear Rutgers tight ends coach Joe Susan is interested in the Princeton job.

Washington State: Head coach Paul Wulff stated today that the AD has been very reassuring that Coach Wulff will return next season.

Tennessee State: We hear that Kippy Brown is interested in the head coaching job at TSU.  One of our sources tells us that TSU defensive coordinator Rod Reed is making a heavy push for the job. 

Kansas: ESPN's Joe Schad reports that, "Kansas has already had exploratory conversations with at least 2 potential candidates to replace Mangino."

Sam Houston State: Head coach Todd Whitten will not return.

NC State: Offensive coordinator Dana Bible has been diagnosed with leukemia.  Please keep Coach Bible and his family in your thoughts.

Georgia Southern: We were just told that a few Georiga Southern assistants are saying the administration already has their guy.  At this point, we are working to find out as much as possible about the situation.

Florida: Urban Meyer stated this morning, "I'm gonna be the coach here as long as they have me."

Western Kentucky: Willie Taggart, Stanford's running backs coach, will be announced later this morning as the new head coach.

Southeast Missouri: Marty Mishow of the Cape Girardeau newspaper says that his sources tell him, head coach Tony Samuel will return, but that Samuel is expected to make a change on the offensive side of the ball. FootballScoop, however, has just confirmed that SEMO is still evaluating the situation.  Samuel does have a contract that runs through next season.

Georgia Southern: It will be interesting to see if Georgia Tech defensive line coach / recruiting coordinator, Giff Smith, gets involved with the Georgia Southern search.  Smith is a former All-American at Georgia Southern.  We'll have our guys work on more information regarding the GSU candidates throughout the week.

University of Indianapolis: FootballScoop has learned that Bob Bartolomeo will be named head coach later today. Bartalomeo has served the last 6 seasons as the defensive coordinator at University of Indianapolis.

Memphis: The Memphis Commercial-Appeal is reporting the search is down to Larry Porter and Jerry Gray.  Gray coaches the secondary with the Washington Redskins.  FedEx CEO Fred Smith owns 10% of the Redskins organization.  Porter coaches the running backs at LSU.

Gallaudet University: We are hearing Chuck Goldstein has been named interim head coach.  Goldstein served this season as the offensive coordinator.

Princeton University: Our sources tell us that Central Michigan offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian is very interesting in the Princeton head coaching job.

Tennessee State: Our sources tell us that a very large number of big name coaches are going after the Tennessee State job.  One of our sources tells us that TSU would like to interview Prairie View head coach Henry Frazier.  Another source tells us he knows today of 2 ACC assistants and 1 SEC assistant all trying to get involved.

University of Indianapolis: We hear the new head coach will be announced today.
