So, what is an "Assistant Coordinator"?  Well, you would have to ask Bob Stoops or Urban Meyer.  These 2 head coaches are the only coaches in the country that have an assistant coach with the responsibility and title of Assistant Coordinator.

Oklahoma lists Jay Norvell as the Assistant Offensive Coordinator.

Oklahoma lists Bobby Jack Wright as the Assistant Defensive Coordinator.

Florida lists Chuck Heater as the Assistant Defensive Coordinator.

Let's be honest, though. Stoops and Meyer know what they are doing.  Unless you live in a cave, you might remember the Gators and Sooners played for the national championship last season.

Memphis: Our sources continue to tell us that Memphis has yet to fill the remaining full-time position and no decision has been made.  In the off-season, defensive coordinator Tim Walton left for the Detroit Lions and special teams coordinator Garret Chachere left to join the University of Arizona staff.  The only coach to join the Memphis staff since has been former Arkansas State assistant Jack Curtis.  Curtis will coach the safeties at Memphis.  The people we have talked with say head coach Tommy West has not made a decision on his final spot.

Northwestern: FootballScoop has learned that Northwestern has just hired Kenneth Kowalski as the new director of video operations.  Kowalski previously served in the same capacity at Bowling Green.  It will be interesting to see if Bowling Green head coach Dave Clawson tries to lure an employee at Richmond or Tennessee to fill the job at Bowling Green.

Oregon State: We have learned this morning that offensive GA, Tim Euhus, has decided to accept a medical supply sales position in Portland.  Head coach Mike Riley will hire a new GA with experience at the tight end position.  We also expect to have news soon regarding another position on the Oregon State staff.

West Liberty University: We hear defensive backs coach Tom Bruney has resigned to accept a head high school job in Ohio.

The Coach Tracker: In the past 4 days, another 1,000 high school football coaches have updated their contact information via The Coach Tracker.  If you have yet to update your contact info, please take 2 minutes to do so.

Note: Earlier this week in THE EXTRA POINT presented by Wilson, we asked you to let us know who you think started the idea of using 2 full-time coaches to instruct the wide receivers.  According to some very well known coaches that emailed in, the 2 earliest accounts go back to Coach Mouse Davis and Coach Mark Dufner.  In fact, when Dufner served as the head coach at Maryland, Rob Spence (Syracuse OC) and John Shannon (Marshall OC) served as his 2 wide receiver coaches.  We appreciate all the emails, including the 14 different coaches that emailed in claiming "TONY FRANKLIN.  That's easy."

We thought it was interesting that Baylor head coach Art Briles is the only coach in the country to have 2 recruiting cooridnators, one for each side of the ball.  Inside receivers coach Kendal Briles serves as the Offensive Recruiting Coordinator.  Defensive backs coach Kim McCloud serves as the Defensive Recruiting Coordinator.

Sure, plenty of coaches in the profession think programs should do away with the "Recruiting Coordinator" title.  As one highly respected D1 assistant told us, "There's only one 'Recruiting Coordinator' in the country who truly believes his job is to 'coordinate the recruiting process'.  And don't ask me who."

In fact, several programs do not give out a "Recruiting Coordinator" title to any assistant coach.

Let us know what your thoughts are on the "Recruiting Coordinator" title.  You can email us This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.">This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
