Jerry Kill kills it at presser with enthusiasm, charisma, humor, and vision
We just finished up watching Jerry Kill’s introductory press conference at Minnesota.
He killed it…certainly winning the presser with enthusiasm, charisma, humor, and vision. (We'll try to get some video, later)
Here’s some of Kill’s quotes:
“I’m a small town guy. Grew up in a town of 2,000 people. I grew up very simple. Walk-on player at Southwestern College.”
“I have no hobbies except coaching football and family.”

Finalists announced for Defensive Line Coach of the Year
The finalists for the 2010 FootballScoop Defensive Line Coach of the Year award were released this afternoon.

The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by SpeedTracs are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. Finalists are nominated by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. Although fan voting is tallied, the eventual winner is most heavily determined by his peers in the profession and a select committee of coaches.
Previous winners of the Defensive Line Coach of the Year award were presented to Dick Bumpas (TCU, 2008) and Jim Panagos (UCF, 2009).
Jon Embree talks about his plan during introductory presser at Colorado
Moments ago, Jon Embree finished his introductory press conference as the new head football coach at Colorado.
AD Mike Bohn explained, “We’ve got to be united. He has the ability to pull everyone together. He is a Buff. He can rally all the Buffs together.”
Embree then took the podium and stressed the importance of selling the tradition of Colorado football that many people have forgotten about.
Here’s some of the interesting comments from Embree:
“I want this university to be the flagship university of the new conference.”
“Like I told the team this morning…there are no excuses. You either do or you don’t. We’re going to get swagger back in this program.”
“Does it need to be a Buff guy? Maybe not. But how are they going to know the Buffs passion if it’s not.”
“It’s important the players understand who we are, where we’re going, and how we’re going to get there. The vision and message will be clear.”
“I would not want to do this without Eric Bieniemy by my side. I want to thank him for coming aboard.”
“It’s a process. It may take some time, but I want you to know that I’m not a patient person. We’re going to try to speed up the process.”
“They can’t sell those mountains, they can’t sell this community, and our traditions. It’s won’t be a secret for long.”
“People are going to know about it now, I guarantee you that.”

Just got off the phone with Urban...
Just got off the phone with Urban. He called FootballScoop Headquarters this morning asking us to remind all the young coaches that he is looking for a “tough-ass coach” to fill the offensive grad assistant position.
As we first reported last week, Florida offensive grad assistant Justin Frye has accepted the offensive line job at North Texas under Dan McCarney.

Stanford makes pre-emptive offer to Harbaugh
Stanford AD Bob Bowlsby has made a pre-emptive contract offer in hopes of keeping Jim Harbaugh from taking another job.
"We have a proposal in front of Jim and he's indicated he plans to accept it," Bowlsby said Sunday. "He's got this year and four more on his contract. I expect that he will be our coach in the foreseeable future."
"When you have high quality people you're going to have others coming after him. Whether it's the NFL or another university, we have to be prepared to make pre-emptive offers and do the things it takes to put tools in place that make Jim or any other coach want to stay here. In the case of a football coach, those things tend to be a little more expensive than with some of our other coaches."
Harbaugh said Friday on College Football LIVE, “I only talk about the job that I have and that’s the Stanford Cardinal. I have a sign on my door that says, ‘Just coach the team.’ That’s a sign that my Dad gave me and that’s what I try to do.”
Stanford will play VA Tech in the Orange Bowl.
Jerry Kill talks about the Minnesota job
Northern Illinois head coach Jerry Kill has agreed to become the next head coach at the University of Minnesota.
Kill has received a 5-year deal that will compensate him $1 million in the first year, about the same Tim Brewster received.
Kill said, "I am so excited to have the opportunity to be the head coach at the University of Minnesota. It is a tremendous opportunity and -- I think -- great timing. I can promise all the people at the University of Minnesota and throughout the entire state that I am going to give them every single ounce that I can give them. I have done that on every job that I have taken. I was raised the old-school way by my father and mother to do my job to the very best of my ability. You go full speed at it and you don't let anyone out-work you. I have lived by that motto my entire life and that is what I intend to do at the University of Minnesota."
Minnesota President Bob Bruininks said, "We'll get some positives (on the hire); we'll get some negatives. But it doesn't really matter in the end; what matters is that we get better results."
Bruininks also made a point to praise Jeff Horton. He said, "I think the world of Jeff Horton. I think Jeff did a masterful job, and that was a very difficult thing to do. I'll be honest — I watched that very, very carefully, and I must say I deeply admire Jeff Horton. I admire his character, his strength as a leader, and I certainly admire what he and his fellow coaches did in this stretch run to really salvage our season.”
"I think he can be proud of what he accomplished, and if anybody calls me and asks me for a reference, he'll get a very high reference on Jeff Horton."
AD Joel Maturi was set to spent multiple hours last night figuring out how he’ll make the Gophers’ fans believe that Kill was higher than his 7th choice. After his third cocktail, Maturi just called it up instead.
