Kiffin explains how they spent the rain delay

With the second half of the USC and Syracuse game delayed, and the game stuck at 14-3 in favor of USC, each staff found themselves with some extra time on their hands to prepare for another half of football on Saturday.

Lane Kiffin explained how his staff and the players used the rain delay to their advantage in the clip.

"We didn't tell our players that this was going to happen, but we knew that it was probably going to get shut down in the third or fourth quarter," Kiffin explained.

"We were going to come in and get the pads off, we were going to go to dry shirts because of the temperature difference, and really let our guys sit around and really coach our guys schematically and not with a lot of energy."

Mullen: The monkey on my back got bigger, but I want to feel a gorilla by November

After entering halftime up 7-3 and giving Auburn a touchdown on the opening kick return of the second half, Mississippi State put together 21 second half points to go on to win 28-10.

A couple of interesting statistical story lines in this one. Entering the half, Auburn quarterback Kiehl Frazier had completed 1 of 7 passes for -2 yards with two interceptions. Also, the two teams really struggled on third down, combining to go 3 for 22, and Auburn gave the ball up five times (2 lost fumbles and 3 interceptions).

After struggling (a combined 0-12) against Alabama, LSU, Arkansas and Auburn, Dan Mullen and the staff put together a game plan that the guys went out and executed pretty well. The run game was effective, with two guys averaging over 5 yards per carry, and the passing game accounted for 222 yards and 3 touchdowns and no interceptions, with a completion rate of nearly 70%.

As the only team with a conference win, the Bulldogs are sitting atop the SEC West at 1-0 in conference play (2-0 overall), and Mullen noted that he believes that in order to compete for the conference title you have to be able to win your home games, and win your opener. Both of which were accomplished today.

But Mullen doesn't feel the monkey off of his back just yet, and explained why he's hoping to feel a gorilla on his back come November.

"It feels great! You guys probably think that the monkey is now off my back. I view it as a bigger one just jumped on and I hope in November we're talking about an 800 pound gorilla jumping on my back. That's what I want for our program."

NFL Sunday TV

Some really great college games yesterday. How about Todd Berry and Louisiana-Monroe taking down Arkansas on a call to go for it on fourth and one in overtime, instead of kicking a field goal to tie it and send it to a second OT! Herm Edwards put it best, "You play to win the game!"

First Sunday of NFL regular season games today.
