Rebuilding an FCS program
Has anyone noticed the job that Trent Miles has done rebuilding the Indiana State program over the last four seasons? In short, it's impressive.
After the 2007 season, Miles was hired to rebuild what at the time was considered one the worst FCS programs in the country and it seemed like they hadn't won a game in years...
In the 2011 season, Miles' team went 6-5, missing the playoffs by one victory (would have been their first time in the playoffs in nearly 30 seasons). Wins over Western Kentucky and Youngstown State last season were huge for the program. Over the last few years, the Sycamores have built a brand new football operations building, added new turf to the stadium, added a new practice field, installed a new video board at the stadium, etc...times have changed at Indiana State and this program will continue to improve. In fact, one source we spoke with said there is even talk of building a new on-campus stadium.
Hard to believe the change in just 4 years.
One of their players sent us a link to this video they created recently. Guys are getting after it in the off-season. Big future ahead for the Sycamores.
New uniforms at Texas
Okay...so they're only practice uniforms, but after taking a look at them, we still felt they were worth mentioning.
Nike recently rolled out some interesting new practice uniforms for the Longhorns. See them for yourself...
Coachin' up the safeties at Notre Dame
Some really good practice footage here from Notre Dame's spring practices shadowing first year Irish safeties coach Bob Elliot.
Knowing that the camera is on him for the day, Elliot has some fun with the other coaches telling them that he's hosting his own reality series and the Kardashians should be coming out for an appearance about halfway through practice...
On a more serious note, there's a solid five minutes of quality drill footage starting with Elliot teaching the "slingshot drill" where the players go through a drill aimed at using the proper angle on a sideline tackle in the open field.
Video: Super Soaker drill
During what would become one of head coach Robin Pflugrad's last practices with the Grizzlies, the coaching staff had a little fun with the punt returners with some fully loaded super soakers.
"The Super Soaker drill is all about distracting the punt returner or the kickoff returner" Pflugrad told the local media covering the practice.
Pflugrad said that they came up with the idea during a hot summer practice trying to think up ways to distract the returners. The original idea was a firehose, but luckily for the players, they settled on Super Soakers (and occasionally volleyballs) instead.
Players have mixed feelings about the drill throughout the year. Early on in fall camp they love it, but as the season wears on and temperature drops, they enjoy it a less and less.
Pflugrad is a big fan of the drill, and said that a lot of coaches that have observed the Grizzlies practice have borrowed the drill for their own use. We're sure it will get plenty more borrowers after today.
Spring football movie trailer
Ole Miss has taken a unique approach to their off season highlight tape.
The Rebels have put together a movie trailer compromised of a few of their off season highlights for some added spring ball hype.
Impressive approach..and a great idea. The credits at the end are worth pausing the video to take a closer look at.
D-II video: "Guys are having fun in the weight room"
Shorter University, located in Rome, Georgia, started off as an NAIA program in 2005 and is currently transitioning to become a D-II member of the Gulf South conference. Regardless of affiliation, these guys know how to get after it.
The strength video below not only has some great footage, but it also takes the time to sit down with head coach Phil Jones, and strength and conditioning coach Ben Lampkin to talk about what their goals are during the course of the off season program.
Lampkin does a great job talking about the strength program in depth and how he utilizes it to build a great foundation for players to remain self motivated to continue the workouts through the summer.
James Franklin explains "We-fense"
James Franklin was impressed with Vandy's practice yesterday, guys were running around, they were competing, they had fun..and there were a few fights.
Franklin says he doesn't mind the scuffles during spring ball, in fact he loves it, and would like to see more of it. After spring ball is over they all get together, sing some "kumbaya", and hug it out, but until then, Franklin explains it should be a war with the offense and defense...or what he likes to call "we-fense" during spring ball.
The staff also had some fun distracting the kickers with an air horn and splashing them with water while they were trying to nail field goals.
The first couple minutes of this video is front loaded with great content from Coach Franklin.
D-III video: Bound by brotherhood
Ohio Northern put together a very good video mixing their off season training with quotes and clips from HBO's infamous 2001 miniseries "Band of Brothers".
Impressive footage and the movie quotes fit in seamlessly.
