James Franklin taking Vandy bowlin (for real)

James Franklin guided his team to their 6th win today and yes, Vandy is going to a bowl game (not bowling like he took the team in August)

It's hard to find the words to explain what Franklin has achieved in his first season as head coach. In short, it's remarkable. It's not the 6 wins and it's not going to a bowl game. It's the way that he has completely overhauled the program. Recruits now want to speak with Vandy because they are seeing Coach Franklin on ESPN, on the internet, on local TV. He's a tireless recruiter for his program.

In August we spent an afternoon with the Vandy staff. Believe it or not, that day, there actually were not any cameras following James Franklin around; but it seems that every other day Franklin or some facet of Vanderbilt football is showing up on the net. Hard to argue with the results.

We expect more and more programs will begin utilizing video to tell the story the way Franklin has over the course of this year; and that's a good thing.

Congratulations to Coach Franklin and the entire staff at Vanderbilt.

Video below was from mid-August when Franklin surprised the team by taking them bowling.

The FootballScoop Jinx?

Don't think we've ever heard of this one before; but yes, an astute viewer did write in to question the timing of our article this morning that talked about how Kyle Whittingham had his guys playing well after a tough start (they had won 4 straight games heading into today's match-up at home vs. Colorado.

As the viewer noted, "There is no other logical explanation for Utah losing at home to Colorado other than the FootballScoop jinx."

The viewer, a division 1 assistant coach that will remain unnamed, did request that we not write about his staff tomorrow morning.

While we don't believe in the jinx, we will refrain from writing any "this coach is really on a roll" articles tomorrow morning.

Quick side note, with Utah's loss, UCLA becomes the Champion of the Pac-12 South and will play in the inaugural Pac-12 championship game.

Les Miles

FootballScoop Staff spent the day on LSU's campus. The environment for a night game is far better; but today was pretty special.

What Les and his staff have done this season is really remarkable. The talent they lost from last season...the issues / suspensions (starting QB) that arose weeks before the season began...Krags' health issues forcing a changing of responsibilities with Stud stepping up and taking over the play-calling...the Oregon game to start the season...then they had to sit some of their best players mid-season...another quarterback change late in the season...going into Tuscaloosa and coming out victorious...and then stomping out the challenge from a good Arkansas team today...oh and did we mention that a large number of his play-makers on both sides of the ball are young?

This past off-season Les hired two coaches (Steve Kragthorpe and Thomas McGaughey). A+ on both counts.

If anyone votes for anybody other that Les Miles for Coach of the Year, they need to have their head checked.

Long live the Hat!

Kevin Sumlin and his Houston Cougars polished off Tulsa 48-16 today to finish the regular season 12-0.

You go 12-0 and this website is going to congratulate you. Well done Coach.

Houston is going to try to keep him; but it's not going to be easy. Everyone wants to speak with Sumlin.

Whittingham coachin'em up

Kyle Whittingham wasn't ready to hit the panic button after starting off 3-4 overall and 0-4 in their first season in the Pac-12.

After losing their starting quarterback (and moving a linebacker to help fill in the depth chart), and struggling through their first 7 games, Whittingham gathered the upperclassmen privately and asked them what needed to change.

Since that meeting, the Utes haven't lost a game. They have rattled off four straight wins against Oregon State, Arizona, UCLA, and Washington State. Some might argue that beating those 4 teams this season isn't anything to be excited about (we think 4 straight Pac-12 wins is nothing to sneeze at), but considering the struggles and injuries...this is a good coaching performance.

Utah will be looking for their fifth straight win (and to finish the regular season 8-4) as they take on Colorado (2-10, 1-7) today at 3:30 on FSN.
