Winter workouts: "We're done before you wake up"
Ron Thomson, the head strength and conditioning coach at Buena Vista (D-III - IA) has the guys pushing, pulling, lifting and even carrying large tractor tires in groups of four during their off season workouts .
Scattered through the good content in the video are a few sayings that the players and staff use at Buena Vista including, "We are done before you wake up". That's some solid t-shirt slogan material.
The video below was shot on "wear your favorite jersey day" during the off season workout program...and we couldn't help but notice the Dennis Rodman jersey choice. Great stuff.
Coe College (located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa) has a football history rich in tradition with past rosters littered with conference players of the year, All Americans, national leaders in statistical categories and even a familiar NFL name. Pretty impressive for a D-III school
We've been told that the staff makes sure to send this video to recruits. The video is entitled "Who's next?"
We have a feeling this one is a hit with recruits that are ready for the challenge.
Raising money through a LiftAThon
Head Coach Justin Berna has a nice team at Avila (NAIA in Kansas City, MO); but he knows that to take them to the next level they have to get "Bigger, Faster, Stronger".
Next week his guys will participate in their first ever Spring LiftAThon. Not only is this a great way to get the players more excited about competing in the weight room; but this will also help the program raise funds from, and awareness within, the local community.
Nice video, created by one of the players (Trey Swager, aka "T-Swag"...ok, we just made that last part up; but we're hoping it catches on).
Another impressive D-III video out of Ohio
Denison University, a D-III school located in Granville, Ohio sent us a creative video highlighting their off season workouts and their players getting after it in the weight room.
The staff has the Big Reds doing a little bit of everything, from tire flips to to some stuff you only see during strongmen competitions.
Jerry Kill: "I didn't have to scream and yell"
Jerry Kill and the Gophers opened up with their first spring practice of the year yesterday, and Kill was impressed with the progress they have made since last year.
Most importantly, Kill mentioned that he didn't have to "yell and scream to get them to hustle or get players in the right place". Kill added that he thought there was a lot of good coaching and teaching going on at practice, and the first year players are catching on quickly.
Always fun when they mic up the offensive coordinator
Mike Nesbitt, in his first spring as the new offensive coordinator at Houston, got mic'd up for a recent practice and the theme was the tempo.
Nesbitt said that it was a normally structured day, and the goal of the fast tempo is to get to the point where they can" play longer and harder than anybody". You can tell that this isn't a new concept to the players, because everytime they switch a drill they're running with a purpose.
Great D-III video
Mount St. Joseph, a D-III school located in Cincinnati, has been rolling out some great videos all offseason covering everything from interviews with head coach Rod Huber and the rest of the coaching staff, to their offseason efforts in the weight room.
Their most recent addition may be the best one yet. See for yourself.
Leach's goal: Offense installed in 4 practices
Mike Leach and Washington State hit the field for spring practices today, and Leach says it won't take long to install the new offense.
"I think we'll probably have a pretty good semblance of it probably after four practices, the idea is not to make it overcomplicated. The bulk of the time you want to spend developing your skills."
