Pending Idaho State Board of Education approval, Idaho will transition to an FBS independent in football, and will have its other sports join the Big Sky conference.
As an independent, Idaho must schedule five home games with four of them against FBS opponents. In all, they have to play at least 9 games to keep an FBS status.
"If we’re going to play independent football, a lot of those decisions have to be made in the next month to two months. If it doesn’t look like we can secure a schedule for us at the FBS level, then we’re going to have to make other decisions. We’re being aggressive in looking at options there. We’ll see what happens." University President Duane Nellis explained.
As their schedule sits right now, they have Northern Illinois scheduled at home in 2013, and will travel to Ole Miss, Wyoming and Washington State.
With all the conference shifting that has taken place, it sounds as if the plan is to compete as an independent and secure a conference affiliation within the next few years.
