Reward for a great defense...new uniforms

Ohio University is 3-0.  More on their start is available here.

A stat that caught our eye this morning is that the Bobcats' defense is leading the nation in 3rd down defense allowing only 8 first downs in 43 tries...less than 19%.  That's pretty impressive.

So, what does head coach Frank Solich do for his guys...he breaks out new, previously undisclosed Black Uniforms!

As you guys know, Ohio traditionally wears green jerseys at home and white on the road.  Well, sources tell us that Friday night, the staff added the clip below to the team's pump up video...and we hear the players went nuts.  They loved them.

It showed on the field Saturday as the Bobcats put it on Marshall 44-7.

Biggest SEC victory since 1971

Saturday, Vanderbilt posted a 30-7 win over Ole Miss...Vandy's largest margin of victory over an SEC opponent since 1971. That's 40 years folks.

Vandy is now 3-0, with wins over Ole Miss, Connecticut and Elon.

In Saturday's game, Vanderbilt picked off 5 Ole Miss passes and they rushed the ball for 281 yards on 49 carries. Franklin has his kids focused "on the next 6 seconds".  He's taught them to forget the past and to play in the now...and he's recruiting the future.

The schedule is about to get nasty for the 'Dores with road games at South Carolina and Alabama; before they return home to host Georgia, Army and Arkansas...then they go to The Swamp.

They then close out the season with Kentucky at home, at Tennessee and at Wake Forest.

It won't be easy; but if Franklin can get this team back into a bowl and get some more athletes onto campus this Spring and Summer we might be hearing a lot from James Franklin for a long time to come.

Below is his post game presser.  A very emotional Franklin opens up with, "That win is for Chancellor Zeppos and Vice Chancellor Williams. That win is for our kids. That win is for our coaches and how hard we worked. That win is for our loyal fans that have showed up here for a long time looking for something to believe in."

Hard Knocks - Ohio Style

Ohio University allowed a film crew "all access" during camp this year.  The resulting five part series, "Relentless" is quite good.

This ain't the Jets; but it is behind the scenes video filmed before, during and after practice and leading up to and through their first victory of the year.

Each of the five episodes is about 20 minutes long and has to be considered a must watch for their fan base.  Seems like a great way to build enthusiasm about your program.

On the field, Ohio (which has gone 8-5 and 9-5 the last two seasons) is off to a great start.  With wins at New Mexico State (44-24), over Gardner-Webb (30-3) and over Marshall (44-7) the team feels it's ready for a big game this Saturday at Rutgers.

Skim through the video below.  This is the episode 5 of 5.  It takes you from their final practices of camp, through travelling to the first game, pregame, during and postgame team celebration.

We're about to find out how good Alabama is

After 3 weeks, and games against Kent State, Penn State and North Texas, we're about to find out how good Alabama really is.  This week they host Arkansas and then they head south to play in the Swamp.

Alabama's defense is currently #2 in the nation in scoring defense, allowing 6 points per game.  They are #4 in the country is rush defense and #5 in pass defense.

On offense, the combo of Trent Richardson and Eddie Lacy has looked pretty good in the backfield (Richardson is averaging over 6 ypc and has 8 rushing TDs, while Lacy is averaging over 10 ypc and has 3 rushing TDs).

Conversely, Arkansas is #8 in passing offense and scoring offense and they are rushing for a respectable 170 yards per game.  On defense, they are #18 in scoring defense.

This game looks like a good barometer for both teams.  (Yes, we're pretty sure that's the first time the word "barometer" has ever been used on FootballScoop)

Here's one of Lacy's touchdown runs from yesterday

And here's a look at one of Richardson's touchdown runs as well
