LSU at Mississippi State Thursday night

Thursday night, 8PM on ESPN, the LSU fightin' tigers head into Starkvegas to take on the Mississippi State bulldogs.

The Tigers are currently ranked #3 in the AP poll while the Bulldogs are ranked #25.

This might seem hard to believe but we just learned (thanks to LSU SID Michael Bonnette) that this will be the first time in history that these two teams will play as ranked opponents.

The Bulldogs are planning a "Cowbell Yell" (see video below) for Wednesday night to get their fans excited.  Sources in Baton Rouge tell us the Tigers are looking at ways to sneak the real Mike the Tiger into the Cowbell Yell to see how "excited" that gets the Mississippi State fans.

Should be a fun one to watch.

Muschamp: The two keys to winning...

"The two critical factors in winning and losing games are turnover ratio and big play ratio...you can't give up big plays and you've got to make big chunks on offense."

Those are Will Muschamp's words on how you win or lose a game.

Saturday, Florida (who is currently leading the nation in scoring defense) shutout UAB.  On the sideline Muschamp said he told defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, "Enjoy it cause it's hard...in this day and age of college football it's very difficult to get a shutout."

Cal gets OT win at Colorado

Cal quarterback Zach Maynard threw a five yard touchdown pass to his half brother Keenan Allen to beat Colorado in overtime yesterday.  The Bears defense had held the Buffs to a field goal on their possession.

In speaking about the play (ball on left hash, receiver to the field tight split...runs a speed out), Cal head coach Jeff Tedford said he knew it was going to be a touchdown as soon as he saw the corner's alignment, "I knew it was a touchdonw...once they lined up I knew...Keenan had a tight split and he jukes people...as long as it was a good throw I knew it was going to be a touchdown."

UVA and IU play a great one

Mike London took his squad up to Indiana to take on Kevin Wilson's guys in their home opener. UVA went out to a big lead, only to see Indiana put up 3 second half touchdowns to erase a 20 point deficit.

With UVA down 8 with about 6 minutes to play they drove the field, scored and got the two point conversion with 1:36 to play.  Indiana got the ball back and on 3rd and 3 their quarterback dropped to throw...unfortunately no one decided to block Virginia's right defensive end who came untouched and sacked and literally just took the ball from the quarterback.

A few plays later, Virginia kicks a short field goal to win it 34-31.

Virginia football is 2-0.  Nice video here by UVA which intermixes highlights, locker room talk and post game comments from Coach London.

Note to UVA and truly every program> If you make your videos embeddable, they can be shared and viewed more easily.  More people see the video, more people enjoy the video, more exposure for your program, etc...

Vandy gets first winning streak since 2008

Vandy beat UConn last night in Nashville...meaning the Commodores are now 2-0 and have their first winning streak since 2008.

Casey Hayward intercepted a pass with about 6 minutes to play and returned it for touchdown to tie the game at 21.  Hayward said, that Coach Franklin always tells them, "If you get a pick, try to go score."  And that's what he did.  The Commodores then got a hold and got the ball back and drove for the game winning field goal.

Great comment from Coach Franklin after the game about when they went down 7 late in the game, "We were going to win the game...that's what we do...I went down the sideline and reminded every player, 'This is the 2011 Vanderbilt!' over and over again...we weren't going to allow that to happen...we were going to find a way to persevere."

Highlights are below

Iowa State gets huge win over Iowa

Paul Rhoads struggled to find words after the game.  His guys had just battled through regulation and 3 overtime periods to beat Iowa, at home.  Huge win.

Each of the past two years Rhoads guys have fought for a big win (at Texas and at Nebraska); but this one was at home.  Rhoads and the staff celebrated on the field and then he came in for this presser.  At the beginning he just can't find the words.

Proud of his team.

Pac 12 changes ruling on the field gives USC a touchdown

Several hours after the game was over, in what a USC official called a "collaborative effort between the Pac 12 and USC" (what???), the Pac 12 announced that officials on the field got the call wrong.

The situation involved Utah's attempt to tie the game with a field goal at the end of their game with USC.  USC blocked the field goal attempt, scooped it up and raced for a touchdown on the final play of the game.  The USC sideline poured onto the field and officials dropped yellow multiple times.  On the field, the officials disallowed the touchdown and ruled the game over (USC 17 - Utah 14).

Late last night, the Pac 12 put this statement on their website:

The blocked field goal and return for touchdown at the end of today's Pac-12 football game between USC and Utah was ruled a touchdown by game officials, making the final score 23-14, not 17-14 as originally reported.

Statement from Pac-12 Officiating Consultant Mike Pereira: "The new Unsportsmanlike Conduct rule is Rule 9, Section 2, Article 1. It states that Unsportsmanlike Conduct fouls by players are administered as either live ball or dead ball fouls depending on when they occur. The rule does not apply to substitutes. All Unsportsmanlike Conduct fouls by substitutes are enforced as dead ball fouls. Since the game was over, the penalty could not be enforced and the referee stated it was declined by rule. The officials did rule it a touchdown making the final score 23-14."

New final score, USC 23 - Utah 14.

Quick note > Want to see acceleration and top end speed...watch #4 scoop and score.

Auburn: All they do is win

In case you missed this one yesterday, Auburn just continues to find ways to win games.

Highlights are available in video below compliments of the worldwide leader.

In short, after a gritty come back effort, Mississippi State, down 7, was on the  1 1/2 yard line facing 2nd and goal with 10 seconds on the clock and no timeouts.  Dan Mullen said, "Chris made the call on the last play of the game.  We gave him two choices (pass or run). I put it in his hands and he made the right call. I like that. I like that confidence.  Chris said, 'I feel great about this run call.' It looked like he had it and the kid made a heck of an open-field tackle."

Auburn head coach Gene Chizik said, "We'd prefer to win football games a lot different than we are, but there's something to be said when you can fight down to the end when it doesn't look good and still win the game."
