New helmets for Georgia Tech?

Georgia Tech quarterback Synjyn Days tweeted the following pictures yesterday with the words; "New Helmets...Lets Get It 9/3."

If it's the real deal, the new helmet features a hornets nest type design with a gold stripe down the middle. Quite the change of pace from the traditional "GT" logo, and we like it.

Apparently the new helmets will be worn for the Yellow Jackets season opener on Monday against Virginia Tech.

Impressive inside look at Arkansas

Jeff Long explains the process behind bringing John L. Smith back to Arkansas in the latest episode in the CBS series "College Football Confidential: Arkansas" that's following the Razorbacks this season.

Also hear from players, a few assistants, and John L. Smith himself about the advantages of having a familiar face leading practices and meetings.

"With him coming back as the head coach, all the base philosophies, and just how we go about doing things everyday doesn't change." Paul Petrino explains.

Classy move by Big 12 coaches

Video here of Big 12 coaches welcoming TCU and West Virginia to the conference.

Simple and classy.

Holgo favors mini-scrimmages

When it comes down to scrimmaging for an hour and a half or practicing game like situations broken into different periods and situations, Dana Holgorsen will choose the latter.

"A lot has been made of the fact we don't like scrimmaging. All I said was, I don't like to put the ball down in a practice situation and scrimmage for an hour and a half."

Holgorsen explains that they've taken a different approach in an effort to increase focus and awareness of the players, which makes a ton of sense.

"What we've done is, we've broken up a couple of different scrimmages into a lot of different mini scrimmages, which I think gives our kids a little bit higher focus as far as what the actual situation is."

"These kids like to play football. They like to put the ball down and play. So I think our job as coaches is to develop a bunch of situations, especially with a lot of young guys, of being aware of what their situations are and going out there and having experience in those situations in order to be successful."

Inside look at Western Michigan camp from a players perspective

Follow Bronco defensive lineman Travonte Boles through a morning of camp. Looks like a lot is accomplished in Kalamazoo before 10am.

Couple interesting things that we noticed. Early on, when Boles entered the locker room, the coaching staff has stats posted on the bulletin board from yesterday's one on one drills so that players can check their progress.

Also, the defensive lineman's lockers are all grouped together with a whiteboard on the wall for easy access during halftime adjustments.

Kiffin on Norm Chow: "One of the greatest minds ever"

When you coach some of the biggest name college quarterbacks in the past few decades, like Norm Chow has, a lot of coaches take notice.

Especially when one of those coaches, is a former colleague like Lane Kiffin.

After practice today, Kiffin called Chow "One of the greatest mind to ever coach college football" and touched on the type of mentor that he was to him and Steve Sarkisian.

Dooley not a fan of Friday night games

If it's solely up to Derek Dooley, this Friday nights game against North Carolina State will be the last Friday night game of its kind for the Vols.

“Hopefully once this passes we won’t have this scenario again.” Dooley explained on the SEC teleconference this morning.

Overall, the game doesn't change their preparation but does effect Vol nation in other ways.

"From a preparation standpoint, we just count the clock backwards. When it’s Sunday, it’s Monday. We treat it as a Saturday game from our game-week preparation."

“What does change is how it affects fans and high schools. It’s not something you want to do every year.”

The Vols have spent all week practicing on the indoor turf in order to cut down the acclimation time to the Georgia Dome playing surface.

“The reasons are two-fold. It’s being inside, but it’s also being on a surface that’s similar to what you’re going to get in the Georgia Dome. You never get fully adjusted to the dome environment until you get in there.”
