Late night report from Southern Miss

Yes, this type of stuff is usually found on The Scoop; but this one was a little long....

A source close to the search committee just called this report in:

Blake Anderson and Jay Johnson both were terrific in their interviews and seem to be the leading candidates. Todd Monken and Chris Hatcher are extremely impressive and many members agreed that these guys should be leading FBS programs but given Anderson's current experience on the staff and Johnson's recent experience at Southern it sounds like the committee was leaning to one of those guys.

The source did not report anything about the other candidates. He seemed to believe that an announcement could come as early as tomorrow.

As always, we'll keep you posted. Now flip back to The Scoop

Highest paid high school coach in the country

During Malzahn's press conference yesterday he stated that he's just "a high school coach that happens to be coaching college". Well, if true, he's got to be the best paid high school coach in the country.

The exact details of Gus' contract have yet to be released, but Arkansas State's athletic director Dean Lee did say that the contract was for 5 years and Malzahn would be the highest paid coach in the Sun Belt conference. Most reports put the annual compensation in the $750,000 to $800,000 range.

Part of those incentives are said to include "an unspecified amount of vehicles from the local dealership" and Malzahn is allowed to live in a house the University owns (shown below) which used to be granted to the University's Chancellor (who recently retired). Malzahn's neighbor will be the University's basketball coach John Brady. How much fun would it be to live across the street from those two?

Any other high school coaches have a better deal?

Details of Charlie Weis' contract

Late yesterday Kansas released the details of Charlie Weis' contract.

You might recall that Kansas had to pay Turner Gill a lump sum of $6 million to buy him out of the final three years of his agreement. One might have thought that the Jayhawks would structure Charlie's agreement differently. One would be wrong.

Weis' agreement is $12.5 million over 5 years, fully guaranteed. Unless they fire him "for cause" he will receive at least $12.5 million from the University of Kansas.

In the contract Kansas also agrees to allow Weis at least $2.1 million per year for assistant coaches' salaries.

If Weis leaves for another job before Dec. 31, 2014 he has to pay Kansas $2.5 million. If he leaves during the final two years of his agreement he has to pay Kansas $1.5 million.

As for incentives...

If they win 5 Big 12 games in a season...$50k...for each additional Big 12 win, another $10k.

A bowl game gets him $50k. Winning that game gets him another $25k.

A BCS bowl gets him $100k with a win in that game earning him another $50k.

AP Coach of the Year gets him $75k. Big 12 Coach of the Year gets him $50k.

National Championship game would earn him $200k, winning it would earn him an additional $100k.

Todd Graham introduced at ASU

After a whirlwind of events yesterday, Todd Graham was introduced as the 23rd head coach of the Sun Devils.

Graham was hired at Pitt in January and went 6-6 in his first season. He had previously served as the head coach at both Tulsa, and Rice where he led the Owls to their first bowl game in 45 seasons.

Below is Graham's entire press conference. It's long, but worth taking a look if you are into this kind of thing.
