Saban: I'm not going to pull a Steve Spurrier on you

Love this. Coach Saban has been receiving media requests every week to meet with his quarterback AJ McCarron.

Saban allowed McCarron to speak briefly after a couple of their games this season; but does not regularly allow the media to meet with his quarterback.

Saban's response today was basically: It's my job to decide what's best for our program and I feel that AJ needs to continue to focus on preparing for games. At some point I'll allow you guys to speak with him; but if you keep asking everyday, I'm going to hold him back even more.

Then Saban light-heartedly [we think] added, "I'm not going to pull a Steve Spurrier on you. The best thing to do is let a sleeping dog lie."

Adopting new technology at Oregon State

It wasn't easy; but recently Mike Riley took a big step...

Yes, Mike Riley sent his first.....wait for it......yes, his first text message!  Congratulations Coach.

The man has been tweeting for months (well at least his account has been tweeting); yet he's just sending his first text.

Extremely fitting that the response from his first text was, "Who are you? Why do you have Mike Riley's phone?".

Whatever you do Coach, please don't start adding :) at the end of your texts.

Stanford and Harbaugh

Just a couple of quick notes from the staff...

Stanford hasn't trailed this entire season. 6 games, 6 wins, have not trailed once. First year head coach David Shaw is fortunate to have Andrew Luck on the roster [yes, that statement qualifies for contention in the "understatement of they year" category].

Stanford's still got a long way to go though, with games at Washington State, vs. Washington, at USC, at Oregon State, vs. Oregon, vs. Cal and vs. Notre Dame.

On the flip side, former head coach Jim Harbaugh is doing pretty well for himself with the 49ers. The Niners are 4-1 with a two game lead in the NFC West...and would be 5-0 if the Cowboys kicker hadn't nailed a 48 yarder as time expired in regulation back in week 2.

Not bad football being played in the Bay area.

Houston Nutt describes why Saban is one of the best all time

On the weekly SEC coaches conference call today, Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt was asked about whether he feels Nick Saban (this week's opponent) is one of the all time great coaches of the SEC.

The reporter noted that Nutt is the only coach that has coached against Saban every year that Saban has been in the SEC.

Nutt responded, "I think the biggest thing is he does a tremendous job with getting good players. You look at LSU, and you look at Alabama, two great programs. But the thing that he's done he's been able to recruit at a very high level. Then defensively is where you see his head, where you see his personality the toughness, the aggressiveness. Then he'll mix some things up on you. It won't be the same thing. ...It's a lot of good mixture with the fronts and the secondary. And then the blitz package. The blitz package and the different zone pressures heat things up making you play a little faster than you want, things like that I think that's the biggest thing."

Nutt added, "Whenever you hold up the crystal ball you've done something very special, and he's done it at two schools."

Nutt also noted that Alabama has already erected a statue of Saban. Enough said.
