UMass open and transitioning to the MAC

The University of Massachusetts football program will transition from the FCS to a member of the FBS Mid-American Conference starting in 2012.

UMass has sponsored football since 1879 and have compiled a 556-530-51, along with 20 conference titles and 1 national championship (1998) and they also played for the title in 2006.

Going hand in hand with the move will be a change of venue, as UMass will play all of its home games (starting in 2012 and going through 2013) in Gillette Stadium, about 40 minutes from campus Boston and about 2 hours from campus. After 2013, they will play a minimum of 4 home games at Gillette through the 2016 season.

UMass finished this season 5-6, 3-5 in conference play. They were 6-5 in 2010, 5-6 in 2009, 7-5 in 2008, 10-3 in 2007 and 13-2 in 2006.

Head coach Kevin Morris (18-19 as head coach in 3 seasons) has been released. Prior to his time as head coach, Morris served as offensive coordinator for five seasons.

The athletic director says they will immediately begin a national search.

They will open up their FBS season next year at Connecticut.

What was Nick saying to Kirby on Saturday?

In case you missed it, FCS Georgia Southern (9-2, 7-1) gave Alabama all they could handle on Saturday. The game was 17-7 Alabama early in the 2nd quarter, 24-14 at halftime and 31-21 half way into the 3rd...before Bama wore them out and wound up with a 45-21 victory.

The triple option ran for 302 yards against the nation's top ranked defense. Georgia Southern has the #2 ranked rushing offense in the FCS, averaging almost 319 yards on the ground each week. Can you imagine what Saban was saying into the headsets?

To put things in context, as Bruce Feldman pointed out, Alabama has played four teams ranked in the top 25 when they met (Penn State, Arkansas, LSU, Florida) and gave up a combined 287 yards rushing against those teams.

Georgia Southern earned a #3 seed and a first round bye in the FCS playoffs and will face the winner of this weekend's game between Old Dominion and Norfolk State on December 3rd.

One example of Georgia Southern's run game below:

ESPN video on Mike London, Police Officer

Many of us have heard this story before; but on Saturday ESPN ran this video during College Gameday.

Great video on Coach London's service as a police officer before becoming a coach.

Taggart: "We've got a red-hot football team"

Willie Taggart and his staff took over in November of 2009 and have wasted no time in getting the youngest member of the FBS bowl eligible.

After starting the season 0-4, Western Kentucky has won 6 of their last 7 games. Their only loss during that stretch was to top ranked LSU.

With three other conference teams already bowl eligible (Arkansas State, Louisiana-Lafayette, and Florida International), Taggart is making his case for the Hilltoppers saying that "We've got a red-hot football team that deserves it".

Western Kentucky will look to make it 7 wins in their last 8 games as they finish their season at home against Troy (3-7, 2-4) on Saturday.

Also, his running back, Bobby Rainey is legit.

That's not how we drew it up...

With 11 seconds left on the clock, and down 8 against Louisville, UConn went into their bag of tricks and pulled out the hook and ladder.

Unfortunately, the play didn't work as drawn up.

Take a look at the video below, you've got to see it to believe it.

Freeze locks up a bowl bid

Arkansas State head coach Hugh Freeze accepted a bid to the GoDaddy.com bowl after their win over Middle Tennessee yesterday. This will be A-State's first bowl game since the 2005 season.

In his first year at the helm Freeze has led the RedWolves to an impressive 9-2 record through 11 games and at least a share of the Sun Belt title. Last season Arkansas State finished 4-7. Solid improvement.

After the game yesterday, Freeze caught up with the media and rightfully got pretty excited talking about the big win and accepting the bowl bid, see the video below.

FCS playoff brackets announced

More playoff football is on its way as the FCS playoff bracket was announced earlier today.

Sam Houston State is the only undefeated FCS program in the country, and holds the number one seed. Defending national champ Eastern Washington did not make the field.

The 2012 FCS national championship game will take place in Frisco, Texas and is scheduled for 1:00 EST on Saturday, January 7th on ESPN3.
