Brian Kelly explains their bye week "secrets"

Coming off of a bye week, Brian Kelly is an impressive 12-2 as a head coach .

Having an extra week to prepare for their game against Miami this weekend, Kelly was asked what their secret is to preparing during a bye week.

"There's magic dust that we have that we're not giving up to anybody." Kelly said with a laugh.

Kelly went on to explain that he always tries to balance rest and recooperation with additional preparation.

"I've always tried to balance rest with additional preparation, and getting a schedule that the kids really feel like they got some time off without getting too far away from what your doing."

"I would say most of it has been in that Monday when we come back, we probably have our most physical and longest practice to get them back and re-center them." Kelly added.

Three NCAA defenses (at any level) have yet to allow a passing TD

Only three NCAA teams in the entire country (FBS, FCS, D-II, and D-III) have not allowed a passing touchdown this season.

In D-III, Trinity (CT) has not allowed a passing touchdown through their first two games, ranking #4 in the country in pass defense. Teams have attempted 46 passes against Trinity, completing just 21 of those (46%).

Amongst D-II teams, only Harding (who is through 4-0 through their first part of the season) has not allowed a passing touchdown. They the lead all of Division II in pass efficiency defense (69.53), total defense (172 ypg), and pass defense (77 ypg), while also ranking in the top 14 in sacks (3.5 per game). Teams have tried to throw against Harding 89 times, and completed just 42 of those passes (47%).

FCS Princeton ranks 64th in the country in pass defense, allowing 213 yards per game, and they also have not allowed a touchdown through the air this season. We saw a note this morning that their opponent, Lafayette, has a quarterback who has thrown for 5 touchdowns in a single game on three occasions this season.

Amongst FBS teams, Oklahoma and Boise State are two of the best at keeping teams out of the end zone when passing, allowing just a single touchdown each.

Teach your kids to coach defense

If you listen to the media, and some of the coaches lately, college football these days is whoever has the ball last wins fifty something to forty something.

For example, listen to what Mack Brown had to say today to Jim Rome.

To paraphrase Mack, all anyone thinks about these days is throwing and catching...and scoring touchdowns.

When the market swings this far it's good to think about taking the other path.

Looking for job security for your kids down the road...teach them to coach defense. Seriously, sit your twelve year old down, look him square in the eyes and say, "Son, I'm gonna teach you to love to play defense." In a few years Muschamp, Saban, Gary Patterson, etc... will all be begging him to come play there...a few years later he's the D-Coordinator at some BCS program, quickly snatched up by the Patriots. Trust us on this one. "Defense, defense, defense"

Indiana AD gives Kevin Wilson a vote of confidence

Kevin Wilson and his staff had Indiana off to a solid start, beating Indiana State and UMass in their first two games.

However, during their game against UMass, their starting quarterback broke his leg and they later found out that he will miss the rest of the season. Through those first two weeks they were ranked in the top 20 in total offense and sacks allowed. Very few programs in the country have the type of depth needed at quarterback to sustain their momentum after a loss like that.

Their next two games resulted in losses to Ball State (39-41) and Northwestern (29-44).

Despite having three wins through his first 19 games, Hoosier athletic director Fred Glass is standing beside Coach Wilson.

We absolutely have the right guy and absolutely have the right staff. I gave him a seven-year contract and we’re going to stick with him. For a variety of reasons, both voluntarily and involuntarily, we haven’t stuck with a football coach since Bill Mallory." Glass told the Indy Star this week.

“Our goal was to find the right guy, give him the resources to be successful and then stick with him so we get the benefit of building something. And I absolutely believe we have the right guy in Kevin Wilson."

This weekend the Hoosiers will look to get back on track against Michigan State, who has dropped two of their last three (with losses against Notre Dame and Ohio State). Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET and can be seen on the Big Ten Network.
