FAU

Howard Schnellenberger will wrap up his coaching career this weekend against Louisiana - Monroe.

Schnellenberger, 77, has coached with some of football's best coaches, and his fingerprints will forever be on the landscape of college football history. He won three national titles under Bear Bryant, was the offensive coordinator during the Miami Dolphins perfect season, and won a national championship at Miami.  Schnellenberger also turned around a Louisville program before starting the FAU program from the ground up.

Schnellenberger announced in August that this would be his last season at the helm of the Owls program.

The program has only existed for just over 10 years and the resources available to pay coaches aren't as much as some other programs currently "searching"; but Schnellenberger has laid the groundwork (literally) for the next coach to take over a good situation.  It's located in a great area, and recruiting in the sunshine state is always plentiful.

In all honesty, the list of names that the AD has spoken with is too long to put on here. There is certainly no lack of interest. Our sources tell us this one will play out next week. We'll keep you posted on who's involved.

They're looking for young and cheap, and I'm neither

"They're looking for young and cheap, and I'm neither" that's the quote from Brian Billick regarding the Jaguars job.

Current owner Wayne Weaver (who is selling the team), promised an extensive search (even mentioning the term Super Bowl).

If Brian Billick's right, then we're wrong; but it sure does seem like the type of team that would consider Jon Gruden.  The Jags feature rookie QB Blaine Gabbert who, on TV at least, Gruden seems to think can take this team all the way...then again, he's also said that about...........................

Rick Neuheisel acting with pure class

After practice this afternoon, the players carried him off the field while singing the fight song. Unless you've been in his shoes, it's hard to imagine what he's going through right now; but from everyone we've spoken with and all reports from the local media, Coach Neuheisel has handled this situation with pure class.

In the video below, Neuheisel says they are hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.

All class in this video.

Bill Moos just wrote the script

Washington State AD just hit a home run.

The football season ended Saturday. He met with his football coach over two days. Listened to his plan. Brought him to a luncheon with the local supporters to hear their thoughts, recommendations and criticisms. Then he thought about it for a few hours.

The next morning (the Tuesday following the last game), he met with the head coach and informed him that he felt that there was apathy in the fan base and that with the lowest annual giving number in the Pac-12, he felt it was in the best interests of the University to bring in new blood.

He then held a press conference at which he answered questions directly and informed his fans how he intended to select the next head coach and he literally spelled out who he intended to hire.

He spoke confidently about how he had a short list in his desk drawer that he updated from time to time in the event he had to bring on a new coach. The list was short, "maybe five names". This is a Pac-12 school, there is no need to have more than 5.

Although Moos said he had not, our sources tell us he contacted Mike Leach shortly before the presser. Leach was his #1 target and there is no reason to mess around when you know you can hit a home run with choice #1.

He made the offer the same afternoon and today Leach accepted.

Mr. Moos will soon begin teaching an online course available through this website only titled, "Be prepared, listen, make a decision, take action, and then close the deal"...or maybe it will just be titled "How to be an effective Athletic Director".
