Um, Coach, the FBI is here

Thankfully, Randy Edsall had been expecting the FBI when they showed up to practice a few days ago.  Edsall had invited an agent to come speak to the team about, "Gambling, bookmakers, and stuff in terms of social networking and really the whole gamut of things that can affect them.  That they have to be careful with who they are associating."

Edsall went on to say he believes it's important to bring in outside speakers on a number of topics to help reinforce concepts with your team.  He added that he plans to do this every year.

Quarterbacks wearing helmet cams

The AP put out an article this weekend discussing how the New York Giants are using a helmet cam to improve the performance of one of their young quarterbacks.

The camera, which mounts to the helment, is about 1.5 inches x 2.5 inches and weighs less than half a pound.  It captures HD video and sound allowing coaches and players to see what the quarterback saw and hear what he said and heard.

Tom Coughlin said, "It just shows you where his eyes were" and it allows them to hear if the quarterback is making the proper identifications at the line and calling for the proper adjustments.

The Giants believe this technology will be very beneficial in teaching younger quarterbacks; however they are not using it with Eli Manning or any of their more veteran quarterbacks.

When asked about the video quality, Coach Coughlin added, "It's a little dark...not quite as clear as I hoped."

The company that makes the cameras GoPro has plenty of video available for you to see on their website; but don't as yet have any football video.

As we've seen over the past 5 years, video quality seems to improve significantly every few months.  Who knows, in a few years helmet cams might just be prevalant.

BYU is ready

Bronco Mendenhall and his Cougars have an SEC opener when they open at Ole Miss Saturday September 3rd.

Mendenhall says his team looks great at this point in camp.  In fact, he gave them the day off recently and said when he made the announcement it was the loudest he's heard his team respond in 6 years.  Mendenhall says he really likes this team.

Ole Miss, be prepared.  BYU has 50 victories over the last 5 seasons (only 8 teams have more).

Here's a quick video of Bronco speaking about his team and sharing a story about when he told the guys they were getting the day off and going to Provo Beach Resort.

Vandy is going bowling

First of all, James Franklin has assembled a very good first year staff.  Part of the FootballScoop staff spent a few hours at the Vanderbilt football complex earlier this month and it's clear this is a staff that enjoys working together, has things headed in the right direction and believes in what it is trying to accomplish.

One of the goals for this team is to go bowling in December (or January).

Well, in a somewhat unrelated story, coach Franklin took his team bowling (round black balls striking pins) recently.

As evidenced by this video, Franklin is teaching his players to work hard together, trust each other together, have fun together, that they will win together, etc...

Quite a few laughs in the video; but the Tennessee fan who walks into the bowling alley (around the 4:00 mark), sees the Vandy team and then leaves is worth sticking around for.
