Teaching moment

Cornell beat Wagner 31-7 Saturday.

The game saw one odd play.  In short...Wagner's punter drops the snap, then tries to get the punt off; but it gets blocked. That's not the strange part.

The long-snapper winds up picking up the loose ball...but he then runs the wrong way...25 yards before being tackled just short of the goal line.

Teaching moment...we should all have a call that every player knows to yell when a teammate is headed the wrong direction.

Better motivator: Coach O or Lane?

USC beat Arizona 48-41 Saturday.

At the 0:50 mark of the video below you'll see how Coach O got the boys excited before the first half.

USC came out hot and quickly built a 17-0 lead and where leading 27-12 at halftime.

At halftime, Lane Kiffin followed up with his version of the same thing (2:00 mark).  Perhaps not quite the same emotion that Coach O extracted from the guys.

Regardless, USC hung on for a big win.

Navy's coach wishes refs had used "some discretion"

Navy lost to Air Force yesterday 35-34 in overtime after a furious comeback during regulation.

Air Force had opened up a 21-3 halftime lead, only to see Navy come back to tie it with a touchdown and a two point conversion with 19 seconds to go. So we go to OT...

Navy has the ball first.  They drive down and quarterback Kriss Proctor scores from one yard out. Then comes trouble.

Proctor then gets up and exchanges words with some of the Air Force guys after scoring. The refs call unsportsmanlike conduct and assess a 15 yard penalty. Navy then misses the longer than normal extra point. Air Force takes over, scores and makes the extra point and win the game.

Post-game, Ken Niumatalolo is not pleased with the ref's decision to call the 15 yard penalty at such a crucial time in the game, "I hope those guys can sleep well tonight."

NFL now requiring live mics on linemen

Beginning with today's games, the NFL is now mandating that each team have two offensive linemen wearing microphones.

The starting center (and his backup), or both starting guards will now be wired for sound by NFL Films.

According to the NFL, the mics will only go live once the players break the huddle or approach the ball and the mics will turn off a few seconds after the snap.

The NFL says (with fingers crossed???) that the mics will not be on while the players are on the sideline, in the huddle, or in the locker room.  They also say that these mics will only be used to add "live ambient audio mix" during the broadcast and will supposedly not allow the networks to isolate and record the audio at any time.

Anybody else think maybe, just maybe the NFL will change their mind on this (shortly) and begin allowing everyone to hear what's really going on in the trenches?

Defense wins

Remember the article from a few days ago talking about Florida's explosive offensive playmakers vs. Alabama's stingy defense?

Well, we're pretty sure who won that battle.

Alabama held Florida's "Rainey and Demps" to 8 yards on 14 carries....and Alabama didn't allow a Florida running back to rush for longer than 7 yards on any play (backup quarterback Jeff Driskel did have one run for 31 yards...the longest rush Alabama has allowed this season).

Alabama's defense dominated this game...which Bama went on to win 38-10.  In total, Alabama's defense allowed just 15 yards rushing on 29 attempts. After the first play of the game (on which Florida connected for a 65 yard touchdown pass), Alabama held Florida's offense to a total of 3 points on 15 yards rushing and 142 yards passing.

Video: Tom Osborne and Barry Alvarez

For those of you that love these guys (or one of them) and have a few minutes...

Coach Osborne and Coach Alvarez sat down and spoke about what they miss, why they coached, what they believe in and how they see the current landscape of college football.  Fairly candid remarks throughout.
