The wife of an FCS position coach recently alerted us to the story of Jay Rogers. For those who don't know, in 2005 Rogers was playing football as an eighth grader at West Carroll Junior High in Atwood, Tenn., when he ran off the field complaining of a shortness of breath. A few weeks later Rogers was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare type of symtomless bone tumor that strikes children and young adults.
In the seven years since the diagnosis, Rogers has not returned to the field but has not left the West Carroll football program. Rogers' jersey number 67 can be found on the back side of West Carroll's press box and on his younger brother, Daniel.
An avid Tennessee fan, Rogers has met Phillip Fulmer, Peyton Manning, Trey Teague, former Vols men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl, former Vols women's basketball coach Pat Summitt as well as former SEC rivals Tim Tebow and Patrick Willis.
