New Oklahoma State OC Mike Yurcich going to school this spring

The spring is a time for learning for players and coaches alike. For new Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich, that means this spring will be spent with pad-and-paper in hand as he adjusts with his move from Division II to a BCS program.

"Right now, I'm so involved with trying to learn the Oklahoma State offense that I have really not even come close to trying to tweak or adjust or develop the offense," Yurcich told the Tulsa World  at a meet-the-media press conference on Thursday.

After guiding a Shippensburg (Pa.) offense that led Division II in total offense (529.9 yards per game) and ranked second in passing offense (387.7 ypg) and scoring offense (46.9 points per game), Yurcich arrives in Stillwater to run an offense that has become a well-oiled machine. Head coach Mike Gundy, offensive line coach Joe Wickline, running backs coach Jemal Singleton and receivers coach Kasey Dunn have all stuck around. So, too, have Oklahoma State's three quarterbacks that all started games in 2012, as well as an offensive line that brings back three starters and a receiving corps that returns four of its top five pass-catchers.

Suffice to say, this isn't a situation where the personnel will have to learn its new coordinator's system. Instead, the coordinator will be adapting to the system.

"Right now, I'm so involved with trying to learn the Oklahoma State offense that I have, really, not even come close to trying to tweak or adjust or develop the offense," he said. "I want to get involved and learn what these players know and what they've been good at. I'll be honest with you, I don't know where the tweaks will come and when they will come, if they will come. The offense is going to be designed around these players and what they can do, but also what we've done in the past. This system will stay intact, and it's my duty right now to learn that. That's really been my focus.”

An offense that has ranked in the top five nationally for three consecutive seasons has all the parts in place. It just needs a pilot.
