Details of Kevin Sumlin's contract extension revealed

It was a very, very good first year in College Station for Kevin Sumlin, and now he will reap the rewards of an 11-2 season that brought Texas A&M its first New Year's Day bowl victory in more than a decade and its first Top 5 finish in nearly half a century.

Dallas Morning News beat writer Kate Hairopoulos has uncovered the long-awaited details of Sumlin's extension, primarily a jump to $3.1 million through 2017. Texas A&M hired Sumlin from Houston a year ago at a salary of just over $2 million per season.

Sumlin's $3.1 million salary would rank 12th among college football head coaches in 2012 according to USA Today's coaching salary database, just below Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy and above Michigan's Brady Hoke.

Additionally, Texas A&M's salary pool for assistants has jumped from $2.7 million in 2012 to $3.4 million in 2013. The Aggies lost two coordinators to head coaching jobs this offseason, offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury to Texas Tech and special teams coordinator Brian Polian to Nevada. Sumlin is eligible for $100,000 in bonuses for meeting APR benchmarks, a fund he is allowed to share with his staff.

Sumlin's buyout remains steady at $2 million, and will drop $400,000 on March 31 of each year in the contract.

Bonuses include:

- $100,000 for winning the SEC West and an extra $50,000 for winning the SEC Championship
- $50,000 for a bowl appearance
- $100,000 for appearing in the Chick-fil-A, Cotton, Capital One or Outback bowls
- $250,000 for appearing in a non-championship BCS bowl, plus an extra $50,000 for a win
- $300,000 for appearing in a national championship game, plus an extra $100,000 for a win
- $50,000 for an SEC coach of the year honor
- $75,000 for a national coach of the year honor

In total, Sumlin is eligible for a total of $3.875 million annually, including salary and bonuses. You can read the report here, and view the full contract here.
