Texas Tech assistants' salary pool revealed
Kliff Kingsbury's staff was busy closing its first recruiting class, but the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal provided details on the Red Raiders' salary pool on Tuesday.
The overall salary pool remained steady from Tommy Tuberville's staff in 2012 at $2.125 million. That figure ranks sixth among the Big 12's eight public universities according to the USA Today salary database (private schools Baylor and TCU did not report salary figures to USA Today).
Defensive coordinator Matt Wallerstedt will be the highest-paid assistant on the staff at $425,000. He would have been the Big 12's 10th-highest paid assistant in 2012 according to USA Today. Offensive coordinator Neal Brown was the top paid assistant on Tuberville's staff at $400,000.
Matt Wallerstedt, defensive coordinator - $425,000
Mike Smith, co-defensive coordinator, outside linebackers - $240,000
Trey Haverty, special teams coordinator, safeties - $235,000
Mike Jinks, running backs - $215,000
Sonny Cumbie, co-offensive coordinator, outside receivers - $210,000
Eric Morris, co-offensive coordinator, inside receivers - $210,000
Lee Hays, offensive line - $210,000
Kevin Curtis, cornerbacks - $205,000
John Scott - defensive line - $175,000
Kingsbury has to be the only head coach to employ co-offensive coordinators that are also wide receivers coaches, and, though it is just $5,000, Cumbie and Morris have to be the only co-coordinators to be paid less than their running backs coach. Cumbie's $210,000 salary does represent $50,000 bump versus his 2012 salary, where as inside receivers coach he was the lowest-paid member of Tuberville's staff at $160,000 per year.
