Utah State's Matt Wells talks about the coordinator to head coach transition

Matt Wells has spent his first few weeks as a head coach with little time for reflection between finalizing his staff and hitting the recruiting trail to lock up recruits before signing day.

Yesterday, on 1320 KFAN's Gunther and Graham Show, Wells talked about some of the changes that come along with the transition from coordinator to head coach,in everything from his daily life to life on the recruiting trail, as well as some of his new hires and how the search for a defensive coordinator is going.

As many new coaches have stressed this off season, Wells is not feeling any pressure to rush the defensive coordinator hire, but has rather decided to focus on finding the right fit while being as thorough as possible during a time where much of his time and energy is being focused on recruiting. Wells explains at about the 14 minute mark that his focus is finding a guy that can mesh well with the defensive assistants that he already has in place.

Doug Samuels has been with FootballScoop since 2011. Samuels joined the FootballScoop staff after serving as a college scout as well as an assistant coach at the college level, where he was fortunate enough to have coached every offensive position by age 24. Samuels is lifelong Michigan State fan and has admittedly enjoyed the past few seasons when he has been able to look forward to quality football the entire fall, instead of anxiously awaiting college basketball after the first few weeks of the college football season.
