Three and Out - Quick hits from around the football universe
- by Zach Barnett 1 year ago
We're starting a new feature here at FootballScoop, Three and Out. It'll be three observations, stats or otherwise noteworthy tidbits across the world of football. This could be a daily feature, two or three times a week or, who knows, this could be the first and only installment. If you like it, tell two friends. If you don't, tell your friends anyway.
1. Looking back at our study from yesterday - where do FBS schools get their head coaches? - you can tell a lot about where a conference stands in the national pecking order, and the light through which its schools see themselves, by the head coaches they hire. Nine of the 14 SEC head coaches were hired away from other FBS schools. Seven of the 10 Big 12 head coaches come from offensive backgrounds. Nine of the 12 Mountain West head coaches were coordinators before getting the top gig. And then there's the ACC, where head coaches were hired away from BCS programs (Al Golden, Randy Edsall), the sub-BCS level (Paul Johnson, Dave Doeren), lower-level schools (Mike London, Frank Beamer, although he was hired well before the Hokies joined the ACC), an offensive coordinator (Paul Chryst), internal promotions (Scott Shafer, Dabo Swinney) and a rare head-coach-in-waiting that actually became a head coach in Jimbo Fisher. That's definitely the most eclectic group of resumes in college football.
2. Yesterday, Hawaii and Kansas announced a home-and-home series for 2016-17. Great to see. Although, is there possibly a bigger mismatch in terms of locales in for a non-conference series? Maybe USC-West Virginia? What about Miami-Wyoming?
3. The NBA Finals start tonight and that got us wondering, are the NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Finals and U.S. Open the only major sporting events a football coach can pop his feet up and soak in as a fan? The World Series is obviously out. The NFL playoffs lie squarely in crunch time on the recruiting calendar. The Final Four and the Masters are in the middle of spring ball for most schools. Anything else we're missing?
