SEC releases 2014 conference schedule

As the league's coaches are on the precipice of the 2013 season, SEC fans can rejoice with the long-awaited release of the 2014 conference schedule.

Since no one within the conference can succcessfully build a consensus on an acceptable scheduling model to adopt following expansion, the SEC will operate for another year with the universally loathed 6-1-1 model, which features six intradivison games, one permanent crossover game and one rotating crossover game. In a conference where the top six teams combined to post a 30-0 record versus the bottom eight teams, cross-division scheduling matters. For proof look no further than 2012 SEC title game participants Alabama and Georgia, whose crossover opponents (Tennessee and Missouri for Alabama, Auburn and Ole Miss for Georgia) posted a composite 6-26 record in conference play.

With that in mind, the 2014 inter-division scheduling breaks down like this:

Alabama: Florida, at Tennessee
Arkansas: Georgia, at Missouri
Auburn: at Georgia, South Carolina
Florida: at Alabama, LSU
Georgia: at Arkansas, Auburn
Kentucky: Mississippi State, at LSU
LSU: at Florida, Kentucky
Ole Miss: Tennessee, at Vanderbilt
Mississippi State: Vanderbilt, at Kentucky
Missouri: Arkansas, at Texas A&M
South Carolina: Texas A&M, at Auburn
Tennessee: Alabama, at Ole Miss
Texas A&M: at South Carolina, Missouri
Vanderbilt: at Mississippi State, Ole Miss

It would be pointless to speculate on the relative strength or weakness of any team's 2014 draw, considering no one's really sure what's even going to happen in 2013 yet but, based on historical precedent, Florida drew the shortest stick with a slate that includes both LSU and Alabama.

Before we post the entire schedule, a few notes:

- Texas A&M will take center stage in what will be year three as an SEC member. The Aggies will be South Carolina's opponent as the Gamecocks play their traditional role of leadoff hitter on the season's first Thursday night. The Texas A&M-South Carolina game will also serve as the first football broadcast on SEC Network.

- On top of that, Texas A&M kicks Egg Bowl rivals Ole Miss and Mississippi State off of Thanksgiving night as the Aggies host LSU at Kyle Field on Turkey Day.

- For the first time since 1991, Tennessee-Florida will not be played on the third Saturday of September. Instead, Tennessee hosts the Gators on October 4. Florida will visit Alabama on September 20, while Tennessee does not have an SEC game that day.

- Tennessee-Alabama has also been moved back a week, to the Fourth Saturday in October. The Vols will host Alabama on October 25.

- The Super Bowl of the South, also known as Alabama at LSU, is set for November 8 in Death Valley.

- LSU will again have its two bye weeks before Alabama and Texas A&M.

- After taking a two-year break returning to campus sites, the Texas A&M-Arkansas series (originally scheduled as a non-conference series) returns to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on September 27. It will be a home game for Texas A&M.
