Monday afternoon Coaches Quick Hits

Some interesting quotes from around the country:

Doug Marrone says Syracuse flying Thursday to Washington: “We’re getting out there earlier.  Not leaving on Friday, we’re getting out there on Thursday, getting acclimated and ready to go.”

Gary Pinkel impressed with Illinois QB: "That quarterback's going to be a great player. I'm glad we're not playing them the next couple of years.''

Joker Phillips upset with penalties: “I thought our kids played hard. They didn't always play smart. Way too many penalties, which is a no-no for a Kentucky team. Kentucky doesn't beat Kentucky.”

Larry Fedora calls out wide receiver DeAndre Brown: "If you look at his game from the other night there was nothing special on his part It wasn't even an average performance to be honest with you.  It's not any different for him than it is for anyone else. We expect him to play hard whether he's getting the ball or not and give everything he's got on every snap. That's not just DeAndre Brown, that's everybody."

Bronco Mendenhall calls win over Washington “a complete victory”: "I was proud of our team tonight. It was a complete victory. Our offense played well enough to win, our defense played well enough to win, and we won the field position battle, forcing Washington to come out of their own end zone."

Western Michigan head coach Bill Cubit feels better about defense: "I looked up at the scoreboard and it was a totally different feel than last year. It wasn't even close. I thought we played well defensively at the back end. Kirk (MSU quarterback Cousins) had to hold the ball more and that's because they (receivers) weren't getting open at times."

Quoting Bill Stewart: “I was in agreement along with all the BIG EAST coaches. It’s an everyday question if it’s not answered so let’s just get some kind of uniform policy, and I thought it was a pretty good deal. And now it’s out there for everybody, it’s there at the beginning of the week and at the end of the week. If you talk about it every single day you spend more time talking about bumps and bruises than about the guys that are going to be playing.”

Quoting Ruffin McNeill: "We knew the situation and the clock [on the last drive of the game]. The thought process was to just drive it 70 yards and score. We felt like we had enough time with one timeout left. I was happy with the offense because that's the way we practice those situations."

Randy Edsall says opportunities missed: “It was a game where we really didn't help ourselves in certain situations. We left way too many opportunities on the field offensively, defensively, and a few special teams.”

“We had opportunities, we just didn’t capitalize on them.  We had trouble getting off the field on third-down on defense.  All-in-all, we had a chance to make it a 7 point ball game with 2 minutes to go in the third quarter.”

“It is what it is.  We’ve done both.  It was a tough environment.  You just play the games as they come. To me, it makes no difference.  I guess the one thing…if we’re going to play a team like that, I would rather play them at home.”

“The offensive line as a whole…I didn’t think they were very good. I think we got whupped on both sides of the line of scrimmage. I would hope it’s not from overconfidence because Michigan is a good football team. But we didn’t win the battle in the trenches and that’s what I told them going in we had to do. We’ve got to get more physical on both sides of the ball.”
