League of parity: Big 12 releases preseason poll

Big 12 media days don't begin until Monday, but the league got the party started early by releasing its annual preseason poll. If today's result is any indication, this conference championship race will be as wide-open as any in college football.

Six of the conference's 10 teams received at least one first-place vote among the 43 media members. For a frame of reference for how closing the voting was, the gap between fourth-place Texas and fifth-place Baylor is twice as large as the distance between the Longhorns and first-place Oklahoma State.

Big 12 Preseason Media Poll
1. Oklahoma State - (15 first-place votes) 365 total votes
2. Oklahoma - (8) 355
3. TCU - (9) 347
4. Texas - (8) 337
5. Baylor - (2) 282
6. Kansas State - (1) 240
7. Texas Tech - 161
8. West Virginia - 126
9. Iowa State - 96
10. Kansas - 56

Kansas State and Oklahoma officially split last season's Big 12 championship, but the Wildcats served as the conference's BCS representative. K-State was picked sixth before the 2012 season, while 2011 champion Oklahoma State was placed third prior to that season.
