Philip Montgomery - Baylor University

2013-CoY-180x225FootballScoop is proud to announce that Philip Montgomery (Baylor) is the 2013 FootballScoop Offensive Coordinator of the Year presented by ProGrass.

Baylor closed the 2012 season strong and continued into 2013 even stronger, riding its historically prolific offense to the school’s first Big 12 championship.

Montgomery’s Bears scored faster and more often than Magic Johnson and the Showtime Lakers, registering 57 of their 76 offensive touchdowns in less than two minutes and 26 scoring marches in less than 60 seconds. The average Baylor touchdown drive covered 65 yards in a tick over 75 seconds. The Bears scored 85 touchdowns in 12 games, making them the only team in FBS to average more than seven touchdowns per game. Their 53.3 points per game were the most in FBS. In 12 regular season games, Baylor hit the 30-point mark 11 times, scored 59 or more seven times and hit the 70-point barrier four times.

No team made a defense defend the entire field quite like Baylor. The Bears led the nation with 40 passing plays of 30 yards or more and 28 completions of 40 yards or more, nine more than the rest of college football. Baylor was the only team in FBS to rank among the top dozen in rushing and passing offense; the Bears rushed for 3,174 yards (264.5 yards per game) and 43 touchdowns on 589 carries (5.39 per carry) while completing 247-of-401 passes (61.6 percent) for 4,312 yards (an FBS-best 10.8 yards per attempt) with 33 touchdowns against five interceptions.

Simply put, Baylor’s offense dominated a league historically considered the top offensive conference in college football. The Bears led the league in eight major offensive categories and placed six players on the All-Big 12 First Team, including the league’s Offensive Player of the Year and Offensive Lineman of the Year.

This is Montgomery’s sixth season on Art Briles’ staff at Baylor and 15th overall working for Briles, dating back to the pair’s days at Stephenville (Texas) High School.

Art Briles told FootballScoop, "Results speak louder than words. Philip Montgomery is a great coach who has been able to stay ahead of the curve with innovative schemes and ideas."

The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by ProGrass are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists (Scott Frost - Oregon, Josh Henson - Missouri, Clarence McKinney - Texas A&M and Montgomery) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. The prior winners selected this year's winner.

Montgomery will receive his award and be recognized at an event at the AFCA Convention in January. He was previously honored in 2011 as FootballScoop's Quarterbacks Coach of the Year.

Previous winners of the Offensive Coordinator of the Year award are Kevin Wilson (Oklahoma, 2008), Bryan Harsin (Boise State, 2009), Gus Malzahn (Auburn, 2010) and Kliff Kingsbury (Houston, 2011 and Texas A&M, 2012).
