John O'Grady - Wisconsin - Oshkosh

2012-CoY-LogoFootballScoop is proud to announce that John O'Grady (Wisconsin - Oshkosh) is the 2012 FootballScoop Division III Coordinator of the Year presented by ProGrass.

John O'Grady helped lead the charge for one of the best stories in all of small college football up at Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

O'Grady has invested close to three decades in coaching, with the majority of that time spent in the Badger State. He coached in two different stints at Wisconsin (1981-82 and 1985-86), Kent State (1983-84) and Miami of Ohio (1987-88) before serving as the head coach at Wisconsin - River Falls for 22 seasons. O'Grady just completed his second season as the assistant head coach at Wisconsin - Oshkosh with smashing success.

After compiling a perfect regular season and wrapping up the conference title in a league that Whitewater had dominated for years, O'Grady and his offense sliced their way through defenses in their first postseason trip in the 118-year history of the program before eventually falling in the national semifinals to St. Thomas.

In two of their playoff games, O'Grady's offense successfully came from behind advance to the next round. When it was all said and done, the Titans had averaged 240 yards per game on the ground (24th nationally), and racked up 480 yards per game (14th nationally). They also ranked in the top 25 in scoring offense (38 points per game - 21st nationally).

Individually, several players have flourished in O'Grady's system this season. Quarterback Nate Wara was a finalist for the Gagliardi Trophy, ranking ninth in the nation in passing efficiency while throwing 30 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Running back Cole Myhra was good for 114 yards per game (1,589 yards on the season), and over six yards per carry, while finding pay dirt in the end zone 16 times.

When we asked one defensive coach about O'Grady and his offensive knowledge, the coach said that it was not only extremely difficult to game plan for, but went on to explain the only way to explain the offense was to blend the Air Raid and triple option. Each one is hard enough to stop on their own, but to somehow combine the two proved to be devastating to defenses all season. Combine that with the fact that they're also extremely efficient running the no huddle, and utilized some unconventional formations made them especially hard to deal with and game plan for.

The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by ProGrass are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists (O'Grady, Vince Kehres - Mount Union, Jeff Moore - Framingham State and Jeff Shinn - Mary Hardin-Baylor) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. The prior winners selected this year's winners.

O'Grady will receive his award and be recognized at an event at the AFCA Convention in January.

Previous winners of the Division III of the Year award are Glen Fowles (Williamette, 2008), Jim Zebrowski (Wisconsin - Whitewater, 2009), Vince Kehres (Mount Union, 2010) and Wallie Kuchinski (St. Thomas, 2011).
