Ron Cooper - 2011 Defensive Backs Coach of the Year
Ron Cooper - Louisiana State University
FootballScoop is proud to announce that Ron Cooper (LSU) is the 2011 FootballScoop Defensive Backs Coach of the Year presented by SpeedTracs.
Cooper is in his third season with LSU, and is one of two coaches on the Tigers' staff with previous head coaching experience. Cooper has served as the head coach at Eastern Michigan and Louisville.
Cooper's defensive backs have shut down opponents all year and are a large part of why they have one of the top defenses in the country. The Tigers defense ranks 3rd nationally in pass efficiency defense (93.05), and 2nd in both total defense (252 ypg), and scoring defense (10.54 ppg). The secondary also ranks #5 in the nation in interceptions (18), and those picks have been returned for 3 touchdowns and almost 300 yards. Rarely is a coach blessed enough to have two national award winners in the same secondary, but Cooper has developed talent into exactly that.
While the entire unit has been very effective, two of Cooper's guys have garnered significant national attention. Morris Claiborne has recorded 6 interceptions (#5 in the nation) and he has taken those 6 picks and turned them into 173 yards and a touchdown and earned the Jim Thorpe award as the nation’s most outstanding defensive back.
Tyrann Mathieu has presented a Troy Polamalu type situation for many offensive coordinators and quarterbacks this season, as he is undoubtedly the type of player that you have to identify pre-snap. The Honey Badger ranks #3 in the nation in fumbles forced (6) and his ability to swing the momentum of the game in favor of the Tigers is undeniable. Mathieu was recognized for his playmaking ability on defense by being awarded the Chuck Bednarik Award as the top defensive player of the year, along with being honored as a Heisman finalist.
Mathieu and Claiborne were named 1st team AP all-american corners. This is the first time in history that two corners from the same team have been named 1st team all-american.
An SEC offensive coordinator told FootballScoop, "It's not just Mo Claiborne and the honey badger. Reid at safety makes plays. Simon at corner is legit as well and Ron Brooks could be an all american if he weren't behind Mathieu. Taylor, Loston, I mean all them."
The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards presented by SpeedTracs are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists (Cooper, Dan Disch & Grady Brown - Southern Miss, Mike Reed - N.C. State and Bob Shoop and Wesley McGriff - Vanderbilt) were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors, and athletic department personnel. A panel of coaches including previous recipients determined the winner.
Previous winners of the Defensive Backs Coach of the Year award are Tim Billings (Wake Forest, 2008), Everett Withers & Troy Douglas (North Carolina, 2009) and Clay Jennings and Chad Glasgow (TCU, 2010).
